ESPN going to 1530?

Looks like Espn is moving to 1530 WCKY and Fox sports is going to 1360 WSAI. Domains registered are CincyHomer.com, Homer247.com, HomerRadio.com, HomerCincinnati.com, ESPN1530.com, and FoxSports1360.com.

Why would Clear Channel do this? Don't they want their own product (FSR) on the flamethrower? And what does this mean for the local content, as little left as there is? Weird...

Maybe it's because ESPN get's very low ratings on 1360 and ESPN would love to be on a stronger signal? Don't know.. ESPN radio could be paying CC for the move to 1530? Speculation on my part.

ESPN finally figured out they were nothing but a flanker for Cheap Channel, and said move us or we go to a different frequency. My guess. ESPN would do something like that.

I'd still like to see an adapted ESPN like in Cleveland. They'd have Mike and Mike on 1530 fulfilling ESPN's obligations to carry them regardless. They'd carry Pattrick from 10-noon and Rome noon-3 so the CC suits would still have their mainstays on the bigger signal. Lance, 3-6, and ESPN up until preachin time. All other programming IE Cowherd, Vanpelt, Etc. goes to 1360. They'd still call it 1530 homer, and then they'd call 1360 Homer2. Similar to Cleveland where's there's KNR and KNR2. Make sense?

I've actually been wondering if and when CC would pull the trigger on this. I can't speak about the demos, but since scrapping nerarly all the locals, 1360 has actually been running very close with--and sometimes beating--1530 in 12+ ratings, despite 1360's much weaker signal. CC may have figured it's time to see how much better ESPN would fare than FSR on the blowtorch.

Plus, with no local sports morning show, "Mike & Mike" is probably a much more sellable franchise than whatever FSR is doing mornings.

I do have a hint of skepticism about it even happening... CC has set up other spoof sites in the past. (Anyone remember the "Jack 94.5" website while 94.5 was stunting, shortly before they reimaged it as Channel?) But for now, I'm thinking the 1530/1360 flip is more likely than not.

Lance actually hasn't been a weekday regular on 1530 since the Reds' season ended, with Mo Egger taking the PM drive slot. Both Lance and Mo have alluded to the "switch" happening again this year (where Lance takes the slot on 1530 when the Reds have a 7:05 game, Mo takes it otherwise), but it seems neither one of them is certain.

What I see happening is 1530 keeping Rome and Mo/Lance, but dumping Dan Patrick in favor of Cowherd, and 1360 keeping FSR all day (except possibly picking up Patrick). Though I could see most of Ohio radio man's idea (Patrick, Rome, and Mo on 1530; Cowherd, Van Pelt, and Gotleib on 1360) as a possibility too.

On a personal note... I have enjoyed ESPN on 1360 for when I'm in a mood to listen to sports talk and Lance is preempted on 700 for Reds/UC/Xavier. If the switch happens, I'll probably miss that, since 1530 is subject to UK/UL preemptions. But I can certainly understand why CC would make the switch.

1530 comes in very well in Atlanta at night and was wondering do they still run preachers after midnight. I have not listened in a while. I loved the station when they were standards and even oldies.

ESPN Should be lucky there on 1360 as is. Where else would they go outside of CC. what other frequencys are strong enough to be heard in cincy at night. i dont see it going to 1480, 1450 might take them back but WMOH wants a local morning show so that rules them out airing Mike and Mike which is a mandatory Clear for ESPN to be on your station so there out. they wont go to WNOP because they wont give up the catholic programs. WQRT wont be flipping again soon. 1050 wont dump christian programing. 1230 is to busy carrying Black Gospel and Black Talk to air ESPN 24/7, 1320 isnt strong enough, 1560 if i remember is a Daytimer at best or has very very low night power. and we know 550 and 700 aint dumping talk. and who would go on FM For FM Sportstalk.

94.1? More and more sports formats are popping up on FM. The days of FM being strictly music are over.

People go to FM for talk for the same reason they go to anything else for FM ... the sound quality. There might not be FM sportstalk where you are but, among other cities, FM talk stations exist in Houston, Detroit, Dallas, Boston (I believe), Toledo, Columbus, Knoxville and St. Louis. I know I am forgetting a lot of markets but those are the ones I know now.

We have seen this movie before...time and time again.

WSAI and WCKY swapping frequencies

Liberal talk tried on 1530 after "real oldies" were dropped then moving WSAI calls back to 1360.

Cincy radio can be strange enough but this is INSANITY!

Like i Said the boys in Bristol should be lucky to be the flanker for Homer in Cincinnati. because who would flip formats to take ESPN Radio away from WSAI-1360. there arent any AM's Stronger that aint owned by Cheap Channel. and who on FM would flip to sports talk.

Sports talk has been going to FM but only in two situations:

a) CBS puts it on an underperforming FM in a large enough market to justify the cost. Those new CBS FM sports stations (DC, Boston, Detroit, Baltimore, Pittsburgh) run mostly local hosts all day and evening, only picking up a network, usually Sporting News, for late nights/weekends.

b) A low-power or rim-shot FM will affiliate with ESPN and turn off the stereo so the signal will travel better. (Dallas, Houston, St. Louis, Albuquerque, etc.) They'll make more money running ESPN sports than competing with the full-power FMs in music.

Neither scenario fits Cincinnati.

That wasn't the case here in Columbus, where 1460 WBNS AM with 5000w day and 1000w night, already was about 50/50 local vs ESPN moved over to the Full power class B 97.1 WBNS FM (The Fan) broadcasting from Downtown Columbus. they are also using the AM to cover different events from the FM.

...oh-keee so what about the WONE/WIZE simulcast of 1530 considering that competitor WING 1410 in Dayton also airs ESPN?
