ESPN Keeps Big East Media Rights Until 2020

As part of this new deal, it looks like FOX Sports might be a big winner in it as well.

The big loser of course is NBC Sports which almost got it.

That being said with so many schools leaving the conference in both basketball and football, one wonders is it even really worth it? ???

ESPN got the rights for proverbial peanuts... I am sure ESPN is very thankful that the Big East turned down the previous 1.17 billion dollar offer a couple of years ago. All I can say is I am so glad my alma mater is going to the ACC next year.

Hopefully FOX doesn't get that deal once those 7 Catholic schools leave the Big East.

That is going to be a pretty good basketball leauge. You will have Georgetown and Marquette who are both top 25 teams. St JOhns is moving in the right direction and so is Villanova. But of course then you will also have the bottom feeders like De Paul has been. They are looking at some good schools like Xavier and Butler as well. For the right price it would be a good pickup for Fox who needs content and since they do not have football at the major college level it should be fairly cheap (relatively speaking.)

The odds that there will even BE a Big East beyond 2014 are highly questionable,
so this is a low-risk proposition for the Mother Ship.

Good point.... It would not surprise me if there is another round of conference realignment that there would be a few Big East teams the ACC and B1G would look for... I don't think the Big East could stand another round of poaching.

I will say the biggest problem the Big East had was having roughly half of the members not having FBS football teams. There was always an uneasyness between the foobtball and non-football schools. I never liked having Notre Dame in the conference especially when they could steal a Big East bowl bid. Of course now that my 'Cuse is ACC bound so is Notre Dame with even a bigger chance to steal a conference bowl bid.

This is a no brainer for ESPN. Worst thing that happens is the Big East disbands and it would not surprise me if there is language in the contract to protect ESPN if that happens. They got it on the cheap kept more content for itself instead of going to any of the startup sportnets.

I am kind of surprised ESPN is not going hard after the Catholic-7 for basketball. While it won't be as good as the Big East was in its heydey it will still be a pretty good conference.

Likely they will sign-up with EWTN. ;D

The Big East will likely lose their BCS Football tie in soon.

The conference is damaged goods. ESPN paid peanuts because they're getting a lackluster product. Add thiis to the loss of Rutgers to the Big 10 and you may as well have rights to a Division II conference.

Not entirely TV related, but could the "C7" as Stationless Listener suggested calling the seven Catholic colleges in the Big East in the previous post) recruit Holy Cross to be the eighth member for basketball??

They're located in Worcester, Massachusetts, which is within the Boston TV market (which means regional telecasts of games could end up on NESN, Comcast Sports Net New England, an over-the-air Boston TV station, or any combination of these), and they'd have an instant rivalry with Providence College, about 40 miles down Route 146.

Notre Dame could never STEAL a Big East Bowl Bid. The Football team was an independent and never a Big East Member. That is why there is a stipulation in the BCS to include them based on specific qualifiers.

Not a chance.... they are looking at schools who are better at basketball... such as Creighton, St. Louis, Butler, Xavier. Holy Cross has not been a basketball powerhouse in years. (Of course neither has De Paul lately.)

Actually they could.... as part of the Big East's bowl deal the Champ Sports Bowl and I think the Belk could take Notre Dame at least once. It gets worse with their deal with the ACC...
