ESPN Monday and Wednesday Night Baseball

Since I could remember ESPN has aired baseball on Monday and Wednesday nights during the season. What I never understood is why ESPN doesn't have those nights exclusive. As the two teams regional networks are still able to broadcast the game. So you have 3 networks broadcasting the same game, one broadcasting it nationally that being ESPN. Long story short why doesn't ESPN just get those two nights exclusive?

That's just how the contract was set up. I believe ESPN is allowed to feature a team up to three times and there is some component of exclusivity. Most teams make oodles of money from their local broadcast rights and frankly, most fans would rather watch their locally produced broadcasts with homer announcers than the sometimes-wildly-uneven performance of the alleged Sports Leader.

If you want more scoop about MLB broadcasts, there is a great message board that I visit a couple times a week: http://www.the506.com/smf/index.php?board=10.0

Plenty of broadcast experts there who can spell out exactly the contract that ESPN signed.

it's July....and the Pittsburgh Pirates are actually still over .500.
Might we actually see them on one of these broadcasts?

I think the last time we saw the Buccos on a national telecast
Barry Bonds had not popped his first 'roid yet.

Up until the middle of past decade (I forget what actual year), the ESPN Wednesday Night Baseball had some exclusivity issues. Take it a step further, MLB didn't allow regional cable telecasts of the home team's games, instead the Wednesday games either had to be on local over-the-air TV (if the individual team had a OTA partner) or no TV at all.

I can remember back here in Southern California, there were two days out of the week where the Angels and Dodgers were guaranteed to be on OTA TV: Wednesdays and Saturdays/Sundays (depending upon if they had a national game of the week).

Sometimes ESPN Games are blackout so like lets say their are Showing Yankees versus Rangers in Texas ans New York would show ESPNNEWS not like Baseball Coast to Coast or evn have a second crew at another Game anymore.
MLB Network needs to show more Lives Games with it's own crews every week.

I just thought it would make the contract ESPN has on Monday and Wednesday nights with baseball worth more as then ESPN would be the only place to catch that one certian game on those nights.

It wouldn't be the same awful thing FOX does on Saturday games day or night. FOX has the exclusive rights to 3 or 4 games and your only able to see the game FOX picks for your market. I would rather see all Saturday games able to be broadcasted by the local regional sports network. and not letting FOX have the exclusive.

I predict MLB Network wil not have any Crews at Monday's Game's their are Showing and should give Holiday's back to ESPN.

I think the reason ESPN gave up exclusivity on Monday & Wednesday Nights was because of financial reasons (As in it wasn't paying off for them in their mind).

Besides, it's been said both here & elsewhere that ESPN, FOX & now TBS are all losing their shirts on MLB games. It's not solely because of the players (Though that's part of it), but rather people are tired of feeling "Tethered To The Tube" as it were by sitting through a 9-inning, 3 hour baseball game (Which more often than not has very little if any excitement in it). This is almost the same thing that been plaguing soap operas lately (Especially since NBC cancelled Another World in 1999). It's just a fact of life

Why hasn't it affected the NFL, NCAA or NBA? Who knows? Maybe it's because there's more excitement in football & basketball games than there is in most other sports. That said though, if the NFL & NBA don't emerge from their lockouts soon, the NCAA will be left picking up the pieces (And don't think the conferences aren't going to cash in looking for big time payola either!)

JMO.....

Cheers :D

The NFL, NCAA & NBA (as well as almost every other sport) has a clock. It doesn't matter the level of play, basketball and football, etc. are all timed sports. Baseball is not. 60 years ago the average length of a game was 30-40 minutes shorter than what it is today. MLB can try and shorten up the game all they want, but when you can foul off as many pitches as you want, you can't control that.
