ESPN NFL playoff game to be simulcast on ABC

ESPN will again televise a National Football League Wild Card playoff game during the 2015 season. The game, as well as ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown pre-game show, will also be simulcast on ABC for the first time. The NFL Wild Card Weekend is January 9-10, 2016.

ESPN already produces Saturday night college football, NBA games and other sports events on ABC. The decision to simulcast the Wild Card game was made in conjunction with the NFL to maximize the audience across the two networks. Home to Monday Night Football for 35 years (1970-2005), the Wild Card will be ABC’s first NFL game in 10 years, since Super Bowl XL on Feb. 5, 2006. During the regular season, ESPN’s Monday Night Football games are available on over the air stations in the primary markets of the participating teams.

Yes, this appears to be the case, but it is "all in the family" so to speak. But I can't remember the last time an NFL game was shown on two networks, outside of locally. I know that the first Super Bowl had two networks, but since? Someone in the know can chime in.

The 16-0 Patriots/Giants game among NFLN/CBS/NBC in 2007 comes to mind as the most recent example.

What a gimme putt of a game it was for Kansas City. Houston was absolutely terrible.

ESPN just entered into a deal with Sling TV to allow those with Channel Master OTA DVRs to get ESPN content. I'm only speculating here that the NFL Playoff move along with the Sling move are responses to a real concern in Bristol over the number of eyeballs they've lost because of cord cutting.

What may have gone unnoticed - This was the first year all four major broadcast networks covered the NFL Wild Card weekend with a game apiece (ABC, CBS on Saturday; NBC, FOX on Sunday}

Fox appears to be the big winner, netting 30 million viewers Sunday night, and eating away at NBC's Golden Globes. It had the most viewers of any game.

The combination of ESPN & ABC led to a 26% increase over last year, according to Zap2It.com.

But, still last among the four wildcard games this past weekend. The Sunday games, MIN-SEA, and WAS-GB did much better. Source: The Herd, Fox sports.

I don't remember NBC carrying this many post season games before. Did Fox give up an extra game this year?

Actually, this started last year. NBC had playoff two games last year, and CBS lost one. This year Fox loses one. I assume this will rotate back and forth each year.

You're forgetting the ESPN apps.....

Speaking of which, has anyone figured out the rationale behind ESPN having TWO apps that stream LIVE VIDEO ?? Am I the only one wondering that ??

Cheers & 73 :)

Probably a transition period for now; eventually on all platforms it'll be just 'the ESPN app' with WatchESPN maintained as the .com for desktops. ESPN3 was a legacy of before ESPN was able to put the physical channels on through WatchESPN and was actually a pay service for a short time before it became tied to cable company login.
