ESPN radio. . .2 feeds?

What determines whether ESPN radio will run a seperate "talk" feed instead of play-by-play of games? for example, in years past, during Sunday Night Baseball, if the local affilate did not elect to carry the game, ESPN radio had a seperate sports-talk prgram feed, (usually "GameNight") now it seems, that ESPN Radipo runs play-by-play of Sunday Night Baseball all across the board on all stations.

The NETWORK carries NBA and MLB. No talk options. Just baseball and basketball.
You don't get the option to pick talk programming because there is NOT another option.

They'll lose some listeners in uninterested markets, but of course it's cheaper that way

The network also carries BCS (and a couple other) bowl games which were also fed on the main channel, however some NBA and baseball games are still carried on a separate channel

True. Its not like they put every game on the main channel... sorry if I made it sound like they did.
BUT, they do force Sunday Night Baseball down your throat even if you are in a market that has zero interest in baseball.

and i wonder how local affiliates of MLB teams feel when the "national feed" of ESPN is being carried on a competitor. Example, The Philadelphia Philles are heard on 1210-WPHT (flagship, 50,000 watts), but also if they are playing on Sunday night, 950-WPEN (ESPN-950) will also carry the feed. Sounds a bit unfair to me. And also, how will you know if you will be getting a game or not?

The rule of thumb is if the Play-by-Play event on ESPN Radio is on during the weekend- it's on the MAIN channel and all affiliates have to carry the game, or come up with their own programming. If the Play-by-Play is during the week, it comes down to network discretion whether or not it's on the MAIN channel or an Alternate channel.

In Chicago when either baseball team is in the playoffs ESPN radio 1000 does not carry the game.
The White Sox are on WSCR, Cubs on WGN.

Usually they have to ask permission from the home team and the rights holder to broadcast the game. When I worked for the Texas Rangers, ESPN 103.3 had to get permission from the team and KRLD to beam the Sunday Night baseball game into the the Dallas/Ft. Worth market. The Rangers gave ESPN Radio/103.3 permission to do such. If I remember correctly, this can only happen one time per year.

In Cleveland, ESPN affil WKNR/850 cannot carry any of the NBA playoff games featuring the Cavaliers. Which is a "duh" because it would conflict with Cavs flagship (er, "mothership") WTAM/1100.

In the past, they aired an alternate feed of ESPN radio, but now have had to turn to putting in sports director Mark "Munch" Bishop on the air during the games ("Munch During The Game"). Which I guess makes some sense, as it beats having dead air.

or having a contract for another sports radio network, which one local station near me does (primary ESPN but will frequently substitute it for SNR)

WKNR's secondary contract is with FSR, placed on sister station WWGK/1540.

When ESPN is carrying a game that Sirius does not have a contract for (ie MLB) ESPN listeners get Gamenight.

what do they run sunday night's then? I know those are main channel games...

I do have one interesting question. If the NBA finals somehow make it to Game 5 (very doubtful, IMHO) wither the Sunday Night Baseball for that night? Or do the offer it to another channel?

I know WKNR is scheduled to air the NBA game, should it air. They obviously cannot air the baseball game b/c the Indians are playing in it. Which, again, conflicts with WTAM's Indians PBP contract. But if there's no game... it's anyone guess as to what WKNR airs. (Doubtful they would put up sports director Mark "Munch" Bishop against a regular season Indians game.)

Another question: does ESPN Radio have two different commercial feeds? The ESPN Radio affiliate here (though I understand they just went off the air) would air one set of commercials, but an FM ESPN station I can get in the car would carry another feed of commercials. They weren't local commercials either.

There was a conflict with Game 2 of the Finals as well, and it's game 6 that would fall at the same time as SNB, with baseball moving to a second channel, same as last sunday.
