ESPN Radio Detroit

ESPN Radio currently heard on 1090 AM, a weak signal out of Garden City plan a move to 1160 AM with a decent increase in power by early July. The station also recently added a local show airing from 6-7 PM weeknights discussing the Red Wings playoff prospects and performance (hope it gets better than last night) with a former Wings goalie as a co-host.

When the station makes the move to 1160, I think it could hurt WDFN. The Ticket is the dominant sports talker but with ESPN content and some local content thrown in, they have a shot at being the backup.

To be truthful, If 1090 am shows a comittment to more local programming, that alone would hurt WDFN. The days of WDFN being a formidable competitor to 97.1 are as far removed as my youth( I am 25, though). I just wonder, can they broadcast at 1160 am anyway? That has to be awfully close to 1130 am on the radio dial. unless they are hoping to get people with digital tuners( I can get 1090 on my radio good, and I could probably get 1160 perhaps).

I've been waiting for an ESPN radio station in Detroit for so long. Before the launch, the closest ESPN radio station was in Lansing/Jackson.
