ESPN Radio idea

We've all heard the rumors of the past few years of ESPN buying an FMer in NYC - first 96.3 and later 101.9. And I know that FM is vastly superior to FM. This idea however came to me this morning while I was in the shower and I don't think anyone has thought about this one.

What if ESPN Radio and Bloomberg Radio worked out deal for a swap - sending ESPN Radio to the vastly superior 1130 AM signal and sending Bloomberg Radio to the weaker 1050 AM Signal?

Didn't they just recently improve the 1050 signal? I live in NJ and never had any problems with it. Yesterday I was driving along I-95 around New Haven and 1050 was loud and clear. I don't know why people always say 1050 is weak.

What incentive would Bloomberg have to trade? They certainly don't need the money.

@ansky: Try pulling in the signal on Long Island after sunset. It's nearly non-existent.

Well, anyway, I have an idea for the kind of stunting that 101.9 can do until they take the ESPN Radio format: they can have people speaking (not singing) lyrics from songs previously heard on WRXP, alternating with famous phrases from athletes. e.g. "Good love is hard to find/you got lucky, abbe/when I found you"; "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth..."

Oh, and I just noticed this:

So, then, what would that made HD Radio? ::)

ansky: it was new equipment.

1050 is a 50,000 watt signal but my understanding is that their specific license for the 1050 frequency doesn't permit them to broadcast that full signal to the entire NYC metro area. In midtown Manhattan, it's one of the best, if not the best, AM signal available. But as DToTheJ noted above, it fails significantly on LI at night. It's also lousy in NJ on I-78.

I can't imagine Disney ESPN parting with the money. They just shut down their Pittsburgh owned station. ESPN now owns only 4 radio stations. I think their focus is on providing a national network. Not running local stations.
