ESPN Radio to 1250 AM in SA?

Spanish ESPN? There already is ESPN on 760.

According to Jeanne Jackle, Mark Landis from BMP Radio has confirmed the flip. No set date.

Its Spanish music station KZDC, a la Radio Unica, at 1250 on the AM dial (right next door to talk competitor WOAI, will be transformed into sports station KZDC.

it turns out that BMP radio, which earlier couldn't come to terms with Paul Alexander on a KTSA deal, found another outlet for the guy known as "The Coach" to broadcast here.

Looking at the signal patterns for KTKR and KZDC, it appears that KZDC is less directional and has better reach to the more-populated north of SA than 760. That should be an advantage for the newcomer if they're going to compete with 760 for team broadcast contracts.

Since the CP was granted just over a year ago they might be fairly close to getting it done. Daytime with 25,000 watts looks pretty impressive but the nighttime 2,000 watt pattern has a couple of deadly nulls, especially the one that'll run due east. Signal-wise it should be interesting but with the programming there's one big problem, namely the "must-carry" Mike & Mike in the morning show. They'd better have a strong afternoon show or it won't be a factor, upgrade or not.

Understand that coach alexander is going to do the only local show....ummm, interesting.
i think this could really hurt the ticket

Alexander is a joke! Who gives themselves a nick name? The Coach, that is freaking lame. The Ticket has nothing to worry about with The Coach! Not to mention all the network programming they will carry....

He used to coach high school sports in SA. I assume that his players calling him "Coach A" led to the nickname. ::)

Whatever, I am tired of stations in this town thinking small market, this is a big market and deserves a big market style and quality, not some retired High school Coach that wants to play radio... The ticket is doing it the right way, bring in a big market guy to do a show... I use to listen to Mike Taylor in Dallas, really talented. He could use a co-host though, single man show gets tired.....

Get over yourself. I'm sick of people making that argument for San Antonio. SA doesn't care about "big market style". Only people who have recently moved here from big markets care about big market style. And that includes the suits running the radio stations. Want proof?

- Look at the Spurs. Hollywood flash is not what they're about. And that's one of the biggest reasons this town likes them.
- Look at Lisle and Hahn. They're good, don't get me wrong, but they're not the best radio show ever. But because they are deep rooted in this market, people love them and always will.
- Look at Charlie Parker. Love him or hate him, he knows this town inside and out and that's why listeners and advertisers still line up at his studio.

As for your points about Mike Taylor, I'd say this. First, if he were that talented, he'd still be in Dallas. And second, if he were that talented, you wouldn't be saying he needs a co-host.

The smartest thing 1250AM could do with their ESPN station is find a way to hire the Thompson Brothers. They've forgotten more about San Antonio and the Spurs than Mike Taylor will ever know.

Well the Thompson Brothers live in Florida now, so let it go. And you make my point for me...
San Antonio has become a BIG market, and deserves quality radio/TV. The standard here has not come up with the growth of the market. I get the Love of people who have been here for a long time, but that does not mean that the standards can't be raised. As for Mike Taylor, he was hosting his own show on ESPN in the 5th largest market in the country, and came to San Antonio for the chance to be the #1 host at a building station. He is good enough to carry a show by himself, but talk shows are always better with 2 host, just a personal choice. Finally, how hard is it to "Know" San Antonio sports? You have the Spurs, and..................oh yeah that's it. At least you now have a guy that has been covering the Cowboys for 7 years, in the locker room and at the games, the guy he replaced talked Cowboys from what he saw on TV. (Just like 'The Coach!") We finally have a guy in town that has legit contacts with the Cowboys and can give us insight into what is going on with them.... Come on San Antonio, you deserve better than you are getting.... ;D

It has nothing to do with the city of San Antonio. In case you haven't notice, no one wants to spend money on talent anymore. Every company that's out there from CC to BMP wants more with less money. Every market is being affected with this type of thinking. The FCC really has made a mess of radio and it continues today.

i often still try out the radio and turn it off, haven't quite giving up , i mostly listen to internet radio, cd's. the last time i really got involved listening to a station was from 1997-2001. hopefully it will get better. thanks captex.

Re: 1250 format moves to distant FM

In the mean time, the 1250 La Lupe format seems to have migrated SE to KTXX KArnes City.

Jeanne Jakle's column today confirms most of the details in this thread. The flip to ESPN will happen in "early February," according to a conversation Jeanne had with Mark Landis. She also reports that Landis promises that no employees who work for the Spanish-language station currently on 1250 would be out of a job with BMP.
