Has been a while since we kind of took inventory... SOOO...

Who is putting out the best product?

I had been guilty of giving S.A. Smith some props when he filled in for Patrick before the Tirico show took over. But man does he really get on your nerves after a while on his own. And I don't really know what to think of Tirico... I mean I THINK he's awful... but I'm trying to give him a fair shot.

So has FSR vaulted itself past ESPN? And does anyone have the gameplan for SNR? How long can you re-air Stein?

As to S.A., I think he is perfectly sized in his present one-hour national form. It let's him get good and silly, and then gets him out of there. Three hours of being screamed at would tire me out, but I find the single hour entertaining enough.

As to Tirico, I think ESPN did take a step backward. Not that I hate Tirico, per se, but they did manage to succeed in finding somebody less interesting to me than Dan Patrick, a mighty achievement, indeed. However, the few times I have listened recently, I have been pleasantly surprised by Michele Tafoya, who seems to be willing to rock a boat occasionally. And I do like Scott Van Pelt, too. I think the ESPN mistakes are not completely irreversible. Cowherd, great, and a lot of OK elsewhere, and some yecch. Still on top, I think, just from a resource/connection perspective.

Steve Czaban is fabulous, and raised my esteem for FSR single-handedly. I do continue to believe that Andrew Siciliano has pictures of somebody somewhere to be still pulling a check. A lot of mediocrity in other slots. I know Realdeal is giving JT back rubs, but, again, the screaming. Ach. To give it its due though, FSR does seem to be gathering steam lately, doesn't it?

SNR is circling the drain. I really enjoyed them a few years ago, but that a national network has a rerun in their morning slot seems inexcusable to me. I suppose this kind of thinking has been coming from them for some time now, and it is still disappointing. To expect different might qualify as insanity. Nice to see Peter Brown making an appearance, though that will not make much of a difference.

Just my two (unqualified) cents.

Why did they give Tirico his own show? He's never there. They should call the show "The Scott and Michele Show" as they are the most frequent participants. And Steven A. has good basketball takes, but he's hard to listen to on his own show. Someone please find Tony Bruno
and give him the 1-4 slot.

My beef has always been that ESPN seems to think that having a "name" host is more important than having a "good" host. Colin Cowherd was an unknown that they took a chance on and he's worked out pretty well for them. But, Tirico? I think he's great on TV. Boring as hell on the radio. They gave him the gig because they thought they needed a "name" to replace DP. Go find a talented host and they can become a star...not the other way around.

I have the same kind of problem with FSR, which seems to think that just tossing a former athlete in with a mid-level host is the formula. Both networks are trying to follow a formula instead of breaking out.

As to sporting news, they can't break past either ESPN or FSR so they aren't even worth the discussion. This will be a two horse race soon. SN doesn't have a chance unless they go out and sign some people away from the other networks. Losing Tony kills them.

In my opinion, having Mike and Mike gives ESPN the nod as the best, barely.

It's hard to take SNR seriously anymore, but ten years ago, I would have taken them over the other networks. They were caller-driven which was a nice change from ESPN's "all interviews all the time" format. They had Kevin Wall, Steve Czaban, Papa Joe, and Arnie Spanier doing personality radio. Bob Kemp had a great overnight show, and Jay Marriotti was a helluva lot better on radio than he ever was on TV. ESPN had
The Fabulous Sports Babe, who was so full of herself that she actually thought that ESPN Radio was what it was because of her. Where is she now? Failing an audition for the night spot at WQAM. When ESPN Radio was developing, they took chances on local, unknown talent. Who had
ever heard of Tony Bruno, Peter Brown, or Chuck Wilson or the aforementioned Babe? They have done well with Cowherd, but I would prefer to hear some of the local talent that they have used on weekends like Doug Karsch, Mark Madden, or John Kincaide than those mediocre Sportscenter "names" that they are plugging in to replace Dan Patrick.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! That brought back great memories! Bob Kemp was the MAN! Was that the same Kevin Wall that does conservative talk now?

Same Kevin Wall...and Bob Kemp was the best overnight sportstalker I have ever heard. He was certainly the best prepared host in his field, and he based his opinions on facts, which he provided to his audience. After listening to his show, you felt informed. One-on-One
Sports was a caller-driven network, which was a great departure from ESPN's all-interview radio and Jim Rome's "punktalk" slangfest.

Does anyone have a old One On One Sports lineup?

Is Bob Kemp still in radio?

Bob Kemp was on the third-tier sports station in Phoenix a few weeks ago, couple of hours at night.
He did some fill-in for (I think it was) Tony Bruno's spot on SNR a couple weeks ago, too.

Lewis and Clark, Gentzkow and Mariotti, Papa Joe, Ted Green, Bob Kemp, John Renshaw. A couple others that came and went over time.

I remember:
Mornings Steve Czaben, John Renshaw
Afternoons Kevin Wahl, Papa Joe Chevalier
Evenings Arnie Spanier

but The Ticket in Greensboro had a local morning drive show "Matt & TJ" and they ran Scotty Ferrell nights after Arnie Spanier.
It was all good, back then, you could listen all day if you wanted. ;D

Man that's when sports radio was at its BEST! I hate to live in the past but my goodness! I'm lucky enough to listen to John Renshaw everyday live and local in Louisville, KY!

Isn't he working in Las Vegas? Anyhow, from what I seem to remember about One On One hosts:

5a-9a: Damon Perry
9a-1p: John Renshaw
1p-5p: Peter Brown
5p-9p: Papa Joe Chevalier
9p-1a: Arnie Spanier
1a-5a: Bob Kemp

(all times Central)

Over time, the line-up did change, such as Jay Mariotti took over middays and later, the "Nasty Nation" took over Peter Brown's spot. Rick Ballou later got Arnie Spanier's old spot and Kevin Wheeler did late nights.

I also remember some of the weekend hosts, like Bruce Murray on weekends with Bob Berger and Larry Cotlar on weekend nights.

AHHH yes those halycon days of The TIcket, you will be glad to know Renshaw is with 93.9 The Ticker in Louisville and doing well, ok he's in Louisville.

I truly consider John to be a creative icon. I actually drive from GSO to Gastonia to do a non com AOR/oldies/jamband show at a community college station and since I always have revealed myself to be a sports nerd and Tarheel honk I include some sports related content and takes. To be honest I have always tried to make my show somewhat the flip side of the Renshaw coin.

I even have the occasional 'expert' on to discuss stuff like the Super Bowl or final four, and John has been quite gracious to allow me to use him in that capacity which makes my manager happy since dude is still the most compelling sports talk personality I know! Then again John could discuss listing in the phone book and make it compelling. But John was off the hook this past Sunday, he broke down both the semi final games 'like a chmapion' and the upcoming title game with aplomb while sneaking in some sharp jabs at the likes of Billy Packer(called him senile), John Calapari (just on principle) and even Roy Williams (for being repetitive in talking about how much he loves 'his kids'). Basically one can talk with John and chew up and entire segment rather easily.

Big fan of Renshaw. Loved him at night on One on One. Also, caught him in his brief stint in Miami. Does his station stream?
