ESPN To Inner City?

If 1059 flips, what becomes of 1300 AM? Still simulcasting or remain gospel? I doubt very many people would go back to WOAD AM if they flipped. BTW what is the latest on WPBQ 1240 and WIIN 780. They are still silent.

Hey all -

I believe that two of the following three statements are probably true:

(1) 105.9 FM flips with Madison Central football, ESPN radio, Ben Ingram from 930 (but he will not start with his afternoon show right away) - should happen soon.

(2) 1240 AM to come back with 'Dead Doctor's Don't Lie' / non-traditional revenue format, but not sure when.

(3) 103.9 FM to be flipping to Regional Mexican on July 1st.

No idea on 780 AM, but if some Holladay family member is reading, then I'd love to buy that station to do a simulcast with our talk format, er Regional Mexican format, on 103.9 FM.

Don't understand why Inner City doesn't simulcast WJNT on 1300.
It is one of the best nighttime signals in growth areas.
JDX is weak and 930 nulls out northwest Rankin (always has).
JNT's nighttime is limited to Pearl...and nothing north of Lakeland Dr

Very interesting angle on what could happen to 1300 should their FM counterpart go sports. I just can't see how they can survive as a gospel station. Them taking on Hallelujah would be like Tougaloo's basketball team playing the Los Angeles Lakers. But that move could leave Hallelujah as the only commercial black gospel station in the market. Even with just an AM gospel station in their arsenal, would Inner City want to throw in the towel? I thought it would do 1300 some good to flip to a black-targeted talk radio station, like what WAOK in Atlanta did after Radio One debuted FM gospel there in 2001.

Matt, since you know all things radio, would it be possible to for 780 to go 24 hours? I know it has to go off the air at night to accomodate WBBM-AM, but what interest does a Chicago radio station have in Jackson, MS? Perhaps, an argument could be made about that.

Why not move WJNT to 1300?

I've never had a problem picking up 620 at night in the metro area, at least in the populated areas. What areas are they weaker? Sure, I could expect a little weakness in some spots, but overall a good signal (though depending on where you are, you can hear WDAE Tampa trying to bleed through, albeit a faint signal).

Another thing: how does an FM sports station impact the AM stations? To me, this would make 970 the Fan irrelevant. With pretty much no local content, seems to me they should be changing and not 1240. As I think about it, sports would be a good fit for 105.9, as they're already the home for Mississippi State and Jackson State football and basketball. Speaking of which, how weird would it be for two Inner City stations to carry the MSU/JSU football game on their two respective stations?

620 is weak northwest ranking Rez area. 930 pretty well nulls it out.
Never a factor back in the 70s and early 80s.

The following message from Bo Bounds was posted on a MS St board earlier today,

"Hello all,

Today, I am leaving Supersport 930. For the last 6 years, Out of Bounds has been the afternoon or morning drive-time show on Supersport 930.

Many of you are the reason why the show has grown and evolved into what it is today….Thank you. With our sponsors as the board of directors and listeners as stockholders - OOB has been one fast-paced, irreverent ride thru the Southeast. The GM and owner of Supersport 930 have been great to my family and me….I can't thank them enough.

Starting July 6th, Out of Bounds will start a new adventure, on 105.9, a 50,000 watt FM station here in Jackson, MS - 7AM-10AM, Monday - Friday. 105.9 will be one of 4 50,000 watt FM sports talk radio stations in the SEC - the best league in the land.

105.9 will be an ESPN affiliate and carry Mississippi State football, basketball and baseball.

There's no doubt in my mind that Jackson, MS (metro area +) is the best town in the SEC. With over 40,000 SEC alums and 500k pop. (1000s more sports fans)
in the area, no other city has the passion for college football like Jackson, MS…..positioned 2 ½ hours away or less from 4 SEC schools is a tremendous asset, too.

From the heart of SEC country….All the best,

Bo Bounds
Host, The Out of Bounds Show
WZNO-105.9 The Zone"

Also, on "The Ben Ingram Show" this afternoon, Ben announced that "The Morning Vent" with Kevin Broughton & Jay White would be starting on Monday (6/29) from 7-10 every weekday morning on 930. I have since noticed that the supersport930 website now indicates this as well.

WOAD on 1300AM was good local gospel station before. With heritage gospel call letters,Percy Davis, and ICBC's community tie-ins,they ought to be okay. Look for true local programming of a Jackson gospel station again.

I'm not a authority on black Gospel, but it looks to me like WOAD could do well if they don't try to compete directly with 95.5 FM. They would get killed. Instead play songs that 95.5 won't play. Go back and play some old stuff. Even as far back as Mahalia Jackson or even earlier. You could still play something new, but it could be more traditional. Something you would hear likely hear in Church. I don't really have a problem with 95.5's music, but the station sounds much more "commercial" and some of the music is sometimes a little over the top. I think a good local gospel station that plays more traditional music both new and old might actually be a hit. Especially with older listeners. I might even listen to it myself. I really like some of the older black gospel.

FM gospel formats like Hallelujah and Power 105.9 were designed to bring in a younger audience which not only would rather listen on FM, but wouldn't otherwise listen if it relied on a lot of the older or traditional gospel music, like Mahalia Jackson. I'm definitely not knocking on the queen of gospel music, but her sound and those like Shirley Caesar and James Cleveland have been replaced by the Kirk Franklins and Mary Marys of the world, again, whose sounds are made to appeal to younger listeners.

105.9 does have a pretty fair signal over the northern half of the SMSA. (Licensed to Pickens?)
Maybe it will do something. I was thinking more of a niche' format. Viet Namese Rap?
