As reported here in Broadcasting & Cable and here in the Chicago Tribune, ESPN has decided to shut down its "Mobile ESPN" mobile virtual network operation. Despite a well-regarded product, the low subscriber base is being given as a reason for the shutdown. Instead, ESPN will look into licensing its service to other carriers as an add-on feature. Mobile ESPN will close at the end of 2006, and subscribers will reportedly receive refunds on the cost of phones--which will become uselsss when the service shuts down--as well as assistance in transferring their numbers.
