On ESPN's website, they are (at this writing, 2:50 P.M. EST February 8th) running an "un-scientific" poll on whether website visitors like the new "Monday Night Football" announcing trio of Mike Tirico, Joe Theisman, and Tony Kornheiser.
As I write this, 53 percent of website visitors voting said "No", while only 46.9 percent said "Yes".
While this is a random poll, it's results so far suggest that ESPN may have work to do in increasing the "likability" of it's new "MNF" announcing team.
As for why Al Michaels decided to leave ABC/ESPN, I think it suddenly dawned on him that by staying, he would not be able to do play-by-play of the Super Bowl for many years to come (if ever again). Having called several Super Bowls, Michaels probably wanted to be assured of doing at least a couple of more; hence, his move (although not officially announced at this writing) to NBC, where he'll get to call Super Bowls XLIII (in 2009) and XLVI (in 2012).
