ESPN using The Weather Channel's radar

Saw on TV lastnight while out to dinner ESPN was broadcasting golf, stormy weather was in the area so they showed a radar map from The Weather Channel as their logo was in the bottom right. I figured ESPN wouldn't use The Weather Channel because their owned by NBC and instead use Accuweather or maybe the local ABC's weather radar graphic.

Or just use the freely available NWS radar ???

Maybe the Weather Channel was happy for the exposure?

What I've been noticing lately is that on the KNBC 4 News at 11, Fritz Coleman has been telling viewers at the end of his forecast to check weather.com for the latest forecast, instead of the usual "check the station website" for the latest weather. Is this going on all NBC O&O news reports?

On NBC Connecticut (WVIT an NBC O&O) they say check out "NBCCONNECTICUT.COM and The Weather Channel on Cable". Before WVIT rebranded to NBC CONNECTICUT and NBC bought The Weather Channel and discontinued NBC Weather Plus they used to say "NBC30.COM and NBC Weather Plus on Cable".

In what area, your area or the area of the golf tournament? I find it hard to believe ESPN even has any access to the Weather Channel's radar (aside from going to weather.com, I presume).

Was this tournament on ESPN itself, or on ABC? Remember, all sports events on ABC are presented with the "ESPN on ABC" logo.

I bet you they made a deal before NBC's 2008 buyout of what was then owned by Landmark Communications. Kinda like CNBC has Wall Street Journal reports, which I believe runs through next year. You imagine neither will be looking to renew those contracts.

WVIT still broadcasts weather plus on its subchannel 30.2 although I do not find it that accurate. I don't know if local cable systems offer this channel but it is available over the air.

They are also showing Friday Nights Lights on Wednesday before ESPY'S.

What a coincidence - The Weather Channel used to run movies too for a short time...

If it was golf coverage on ESPN2 the other day, that was produced by The Golf Channel, who would have plenty of access to The Weather Channel radar.

Now, why Golf Channel stuff was airing on ESPN2 - your guess is as good as mine.

NBC has the broadcast rights for many USGA events such as this weekends Womens' United States Open Championship. I believe NBC exercised the option with ESPN to broadcast the first two days (and Monday's completion of play and playoff) while handling the weekend broadcasts on NBC. (ESPN also broadcast the first two days of the Mens' US Open Championship last month.)

ESPN usly does the first 2 days of a Golf Event then either CBS or NBC on Weekends. Friday Night Lights is on Tomorrow not Wednesday.

Area where the women's golf match was which was airing on ESPN 2. Not that I was watching it, was just on in the resturant we ate at. As for ESPN they were airing a NASCAR race.

Because Golf Channel is an NBC property and NBC gets branding rights on all weekend coverage, regardless of who ends up airing it (remember all those rain delays?)

I believe ESPN owns the rights to the early rounds outright.
