ESPNLA 710 New Weekday Lineup Starts September 3

https://news.****************/articles/c40606/ESPNLA-710-New-Weekday-Lineup-Starts-September-3

"We are excited to further strengthen an already powerful talk lineup by moving Mason & Ireland to afternoon drive and capitalizing on the momentum of The Will Cain Show," said ESPNLA 710 VP/GM Scott McCarthy. "These two shows plus Keyshawn, LZ and Travis, LA's only local sports morning show, and the always compelling Stephen A. Smith will keep listeners updated on local and national major sports stories. Jorge Sedano's NBA expertise will prepare listeners for the night's action and takes on greater importance with the high expectations surrounding the Lakers and Clippers."

ESPNLA 710's new lineup beginning Tuesday, September 3:

The Morning Show with Keyshawn, LZ and Travis (6-10am)
The Stephen A. Smith Show (10am-noon)
The Will Cain Show (noon-3pm)
Mason & Ireland (3-6:30pm)
The Sedano Show (6:30-9pm)

Here are the shows coming to KSPN Los Angeles.

From 10a to 3p the station will be automated w/ a feed from Bristol. Along with the changes comes layoffs. 19 year veteran Mason & Ireland board op Jay Corrales is out, along with a Sedano producer, a promo kid, and a sales assistant.

More changes coming to 710 ESPN...
-Keyshawn Johnson, currently of "Mornings with Keyshawn, LZ, and Travis" will be heading to the network to front a national morning show in August.
-With Will Cain gone from middays, (Praise The Lord!) it appears the station may **possibly** return to all local programming all day. On the Sedano show, 10am-12pm, Sedano was asking callers what they would like to see in the new fall lineup. The station's Assistant Program Director, Greg Bergman, also serves as the shows producer. Sedano was trying to get Greg to drop any sort of hints, but he wasn't having it. We shall see what happens in the coming weeks.

A lot of people have learned lately that they can indeed do just fine without sports, especially the narcissistic woke variety which is now en vogue. I have feeling a lot of those same people will find a lot less use for sports radio too. I see challenging times ahead for these sports talkers.

That's a funny thought. People can do just fine without a lot of things. We could start an entire thread on the subject.

Probably, but my point is that we are entering a new paradigm in a post COVID, more politicized world where outlets like ESPN and Fox have been all too happy to get involved in politics, that alienate, and thus reduce, a sizeable percentage of the audience. Or to put another way, the supply of sports entertainment will start to exceed the much reduced demand. That will go for sports talk, especially in markets that were already marginal for the format like LA.

On a related point, let's face it, conservative talk and sports talk are the only things holding up the AM band. Conservative talk is fading nationally and sports will take years to get back to where they were. The AM band will suffer and possibly within a few short years will be almost entirely the realm of foreign language programming.

Which may be the reason why the format is only on AM in LA. As we discussed, I'm sure Entercom has thought about putting it on one of their FMs. But there's no rush since the mass audience in LA simply has more things to be passionate about. Starting with the beach. But even in Boston, a city that was able to support two sports FMs, only one has been able to get any audience during COVID.

Marginal? KLAC is #10 in billings in a market where even being 25th gets you $10 million a year in revenue: KLAC was well over double that amount last year and was, in fact, the 27th highest biller in the country and the 4th highest sports biller nationally.

Let's review again and see if those numbers still hold up in a year or two.

Nobody’s numbers will be the same this year but they likely will track the market in future years. The have been doing well for some time and their partnership agreement definitely favors them. They are owned by a partnership of iHeart with the Dodgers and have alliances with other teams as well.

Being from the Bay Area, where KNBR (at least pre-COVID) was one of the top stations, I always found it hard to believe that KLAC was ranked so low in the market. I always enjoyed listening to KLAC, especially the Petros and Money show, and thought it was very good. Speaks to the widening differences in the Bay Area vs. LA radio markets.

Sports stations overperform because they are often the most reliable place to find young men with money to spend on things. If 570 KLAC has trouble getting much better than a 1 rating, yet bills so well with only its AM signal, this must be true.

I think Channel Flipper is being too negative. Sports and radio have been paired for nearly 100 years. Once the pandemic is over, men will return to listening to games on the radio when they can't watch them on TV.
