Estrella TV

According to tvspy.com, there will be a new Hispanic competitor in the U.S., backed by Liberman:

"On July 1, Estrella TV will launch in about 70 percent of Hispanic homes in most of the 20 largest Hispanic markets. And it's launching in time to participate in this summer's $1.6 billion Spanish-language upfront ad market.

Estrella TV isn't just another upstart.

The network is being launched by Liberman Broadcasting in Los Angeles, an established player in Spanish-language radio since the 1970s and television since the 1980s. It's already a formidable TV competitor to Univision and Telemundo stations in five markets, including L.A., San Diego, Houston and Dallas.

Estrella TV will broadcast programs geared to all Hispanics, with an emphasis on the 18-49 demographic, airing news and original entertainment programming, including comedies and variety shows. It will not air the novelas that are the backbone of Univision and Telemundo programming."

They are already up full-time on KPNZ-TV in Salt Lake City (Channel 24).

As well as KMPX in Dallas, KZJL in Houston, KRCA in Los Angeles, KSDX-LP in San Diego. Coming soon to KVPA-LP in Phoenix, WASA-LP in New York, and numerous announced affiliates in Texas.

Estrella TV has great potential with a nice arsenal of owned and operated full-power station unlike other recent networks like Azteca America and LAT TV. Azteca America is down to one primary full-power station, a few subchannels, and dozens of low-power stations. LAT TV was pretty much just their two lptv station, one in Phoenix (which Liberman is buying) and one in Houston. LAT TV's affiliates were mostly on weak low-power stations with weak management.

LAT TV had numerous affiliates in many hispanic markets, as well as several that signed up as affiliates, but, for some reason or another, never aired the network. While the owners of LAT TV owned a record two stations, many of its affils were owned by Equity Broadcasting, a forever-troubled broadcaster.
