Ethnic Radio on Satellite

You think this is possible on XM or even Sirius? There are 5 million Russian Speaking people in the United States, but not enough Russian stations? But if there was one main station, I can see the Russian community buying into Satelite Radio.

It would be nice if either Satellite service would expand their International offerings,I guess it is a bandwidth issue.
I am not happy with the one world music channel,if they could have a few more like CH102 for different regions things would be good.
I also beleive CH 100 plays Native American music far more often than it should.

For the both above......please give up your passports or citizenships and move to a country that does not speak english. XM and Sirius are American based companies with American technology, and it's primary is to provide American entertainment.
It's unfortunate enough that available bandwidth is already limited to provide the potential music quality on each channel that the 2 satellite companies can provide as well as trying to already give a broad list of entertaining genres as it is.

It turns me off seeing somebody lobbying something that they only feel is themselve's is missing.....by reviewing some worthless statistic or just being nice and feeling important. There maybe a million speaking Russians, but there still is 200 million speaking english.

Satellite radio was originally designed to play many musical formats...and the companies or networks you here on there are just leasing space so the 2 start up companies have some income coming in. And providing information to the public as well. And in English.

If you want a U.N. cesspool, that's what shortwave is for.

I beleive I mentioned bandwidth was an issue.

I think the thread starter was just asking a question.

What if you you like to hear all different forms of music from many different countries?
International music if far better than N.H.L. hockey and when bandwidth issues are solved it could be a path to more subscribers.

United States Of America. Most of it. Or manufactured to be used in America.

Yes....to get more subscribers. But when you start to dilute different languages that MOST of us can't understand....the many who want english programming will start to defecting satellite like terrestrial radio.

Of course it's an issue. When we get people like you trying to influence or sacrifice our quality we already have just to make room for something else...that most don't care for, these days it becomes a reality.
Take a look at cable TV.

Why would he or you want would even want to think of it. Isn't it hard enough already as far as all the other adjustments. Just would I love....skimming through every other or 2 or 3 channels of non-english channels on my mi-fi.
Far fetched? I wouldn't doubt anything these days.

I can understand if XM made a complete different receiver and set aside seperate bandwidth/subscriptions for people who want to subscribe to foreign language channels like satellite TV that makes a special dish to receive them.
And I believe there is all already a service out that does that, which XM owns a certain percentage of (I can't think of the name at the moment)that does international programming. Find.....but leave my receiver alone.

I just wanted to highlight some of your insane comments above. Gee, for someone who loves the English language so much, you might try actually learning how to use it in coherent sentences that make sense. Judging from all the grammar, spelling, and structure errors, maybe you need to take an English class with some of these people you complain so much about.
As for me, I am open to and enjoy having international programming. I also take pride in the fact that I am not close-minded and predjudiced. We live in a "WORLD" economy now, and the more we break down barriers and attempt to assimilate and learn more about other cultures, the better we will be for it.

Re: ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Skinhead, I mean Apco25-

That was the most retarded statement I have ever read. The United States of America has always been a metling pot for a variety of cultures. That's what our wonderful country is based on.

You think International stations would take up space on XM? I don't really think 1 out of 200 channels makes that much of an impact. Here is an example for you. I am American, I was born here, I have lived here my whole life, but my family is from Russia, and my mother ownes a Russian Language program that broadcasts in Chicago & NY. Study's show that the Russian speaking population gets most of their news/entertainment from the radio. While the median income of households in New York City was $38,866, the median income of Russian households was $47,000 according to the most recent Census data. So if there are over 5 Million Russian people (not counting other cultures that understand the Russian Langauage(Ukrainians, Latvians, Lithuanians, anybody that was part of the former Soviet Union) So if even half of those people buy XM radio, that's already 3 million new subscribers. Because of 1 Channel.

And just FYI, your family isn't orignally from this country either. Maybe you should ask your family where you are originally from.

What's really scary is $5 says that APCO25 is in a Law Enforcement-related field.

Narrowcasting is what satellite broadcasting is all about.

Good question. There's definitely demand for national satellite foreign TV, as shown by Dish Network. Dish gets a ton of subscribers to their foreign packages.

The difference between XM and Dish is that Dish has a LOT more bandwidth to play with though. When Dish added its foreign language programming, no English-language channels had to be pushed off.

The problem is that XM has already cut its musical offerings, ditching stations like "On The Rocks" and "Liquid Metal". It will probably be cutting more when Canadian stations come aboard. If XM cuts more music for multicultural programming, the subscriber backlash may be too big. While 10 rock stations may seem like a lot, that kind of variety is why subscribers prefer XM to FM.

So, in short, the demand is there, but the bandwidth isn't, and more than a few subscribers would be ticked enough to cancel if they find their favorite rock station has been replaced with a Russian channel.

You can thank the FCC for all of this. Satellite radio could have had double the bandwidth it has today, and we wouldn't need to have debates about what does or doesn't fit.

It's pretty much what I'm trying to explain to some of these idiots. It's so easy of them to think let's offer this and let's give away that, before you know what the consequences are. It's always easy to spend before you know what your getting in return.
Even satellite TV is annoying when you have to cruise through 7 or 8 channels in a row that are non-english before you hit another English station. room or no room.

International XM is in Canada soon. And as I stated before there is no offical language.... so even if it is just servicing the US of A no one says it has to be in English.

So sorry you would have to cruise through 7 or 8 channels of non english broadcasting the world is A HORRIBLE TERRIBLE place.

First of all, I type on a cheap $8.00 keyboard. I have a super computer system with a cheap keyboard which happens to cause typos, misspelled words when I'm typing long paragraphs.
I'm here to post my opinions and comments, not novels. And reading posts from idiots like you, brings out the adrenaline in me which happens that I'm quick with the submit button, without checking my errors.
As far as the cheap keyboard......that's my problem.

You have a bigger problem. I can't believe I read this last paragraph. Just because we live in a world economy.... is because we gave it all away. Just like you want to give away your XM channels.
Who the hell are you to tell us we have to assmilate to every culture, enemy, and freak that's out there.
Does Russia, France, Mexico, assimilate to our cultures? Within their borders.
Why don't you move over there for awhile, come back and then tell us how well you adapted. Or they adapted to you Mr. Metro-sexual.

My ancestry is from Russia, I have never been there. But I was taught and brought up with English and American culture, but it doesn't mean change my diet, clothing, and my entertainment values or even my race. and my XM channels.

Uhhh short answer yes. Long answer yes you dummy. I wonder why they opened a McDonald's in Iraq? Hm I sure didn't see a 50 Cent concert overseas recently... There arent Disney World's in other countries.

Outside of your house with your super computer and cheap keyboard there is this place called the real world... I suggets you check it out.

Not when you overflow and flood the population like we do today it isn't.
And look what we bring in. It's not the same as the old immigration. But what do you know, you got your pants hanging down with a stupid name on it , and wearing women's eye shadow probably.

The buck doesn't stop there pal, not just 1 channel. Next thing is Swaheli (I hope I spelled it correctly, if not sue me later), French, Mandarin, Hosea, etc....then XM takes the decade channels, Lucy and Ethel, Jazz and Watercolors and pairs them into one , due to the multicultural rights (How come we don't have a channel), and all because lobbyist like you read a statistic somewhere that most people don't care or notice about.....and then you have shortwave radio....not satellite. Along with baseing the statistics on New York City yet....cut me a break. The people of Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, are not important enough.
I know you try this compassionate or understanding do good/feel good mode, but the brainwash people like yourself will learn one day you can't have it both ways.

Yes my great grandfathers/mothers are from Russia and Lithuania. It doesn't mean you break down the heritage of this country or of radio. So take the nose ring out of your nostrils and pick up the back of your pants before I'm tempted to #$#%$^u%%$%$.

My pants hanging down with a stupid name on it? And wearing women's eye shadow? What the hell is that supposed to mean? I'm not 16. What does that have to do with anything we are debating about?

I'm using NY as an exmaple. The Russian population is spread all over the United States. Most have a higher per capita then any other ethnic group. I'm also not saying you have to dedicate a whole channel to Russians. You can have an International Channel or two, with a mix of ethnicity's. Every major city in the U.S has a Chinatown, Greektown, etc. If you don't want anything unamerican, what's the point of having the BBC on? That's not from America.

Before you’re tempted to what? How do you know what I’m like? How can I be a working professional and have a nose ring, and have my pants really low? You’re an idiot, not even worth debating anything with you. Obviously an intelligent debate on here is impossible to do with an ignorant little prick like yourself.

My original post was asking an intelligent question. I got some really great answers. For example, I didn’t know XM & Sirius had a certain amount of bandwidth in which they can use. I thought they had an unlimited amount of channels. There were some great responses to my query. Then there was your racist response. Its people like you that give a bad name to the U.S Citizens. Its people like you that make people from other countries hate the U.S.

What you forget my friend, is that XM & Sirius is a money making business. They want to make a prophet. And if one channel is going to add 1 million + subscribers, that is a big deal to them. Look at the signing of Stern as an example. Sirius has seen a large increase in subscriptions the closer and closer we get to his on air date. That is why he got the big bucks.

Anyway, I wasn't saying it HAS TO BE DONE. I just had a question, where I wanted to get intelligent responses.
Edited by ZelenRecords on 11/02/05 11:00 PM.

OK, there is no need for suicide, or joining the local Neo-Nazi club (my arms get tired from hailing fesces eating leaders).

We need to teach the Russians Korean. Then they can sign up with Sirius and listen to the Korean channel. Kaching!
