Ethnic stations on the FM dial.

Are there any Ethnic stations left on the FM dial? I know KSQQ in San Jose broadcast mix of portugues, vietamese, madarin chinese, and hindi. Also, I know there's a station in Providence RI that broadcast broked ethnic program, but thats it so far I know.

KALI-FM/106.3 Santa Ana CA (Los Angeles market) broadcasts in Pakistani, Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Japanese and Cambodian.
______________

If Newsweb's Nine FM ever goes off the air, and they're not able to come up with a format, they might broker on WRZA (99.9) and air primarily spanish language brokered programming, and on WKIE (92.7), they could air Polish, German, Arab, and Russian programming on that frequency. I would have no clue what Newsweb would do with WDEK (92.5) since its signal is mostly reaches cows, and has mostly secondary contour over Chicago's far western suburbs & Rockford.
I almost thought that Newsweb was going to put brokered programming on 99.9 when they bought it from Entravision, since all their AM stations are brokered, and make more money than what Nine FM is likely making.

Start with approximately 400 spanish langauge FMs in the US, and then add the FMs that are urban, urban AC, gospel and you have nearly 1000 ethnic FMs just serving Hispanics and Blacks.

WJFD 97.3 New Bedford, MA is all Portuguese. With 50,000 watts, it serves Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, Rhode Island, and it can be heard on a high quality receiver throughout greater Boston.

Urban, urban AC, and gospel are not part of this mix. They're not what is meant by "ethnic".

Does Cajun count?

Louisiana has several Cajun FMs that bounce back and forth between speaking English and French.
I seem to remember some Bluegrass non-comm FM stations exist in Tennessee and/or Kentucky.
There are a handful of Hatian pirate stations in south Florida, maybe even a legal one.
I think a Korean group just bought a small FM north of Atlanta.
Many LPFM permits were applied for by Chinese churches/religious organizations.
And if we're talking about all 50 states here, I'm sure Hawaii and Alaska are dominated by ethnic FMs.

Black radio has been "ethnic" radio since it began. Black (or African American) is an ethnicity, just as Hispanic is. In fact, if you look at the Census, they define both Black and Hispanic as the major ethnic or minority groups in the USA.

I didn't know this thread was "speculation about what might happen".

The original poster asked a question which your post does not even remotely answer.

David, while you are factually correct, I interpret the original poster's question to mean existing stations with formats in languages other than English or Spanish. I believe we all agree that both English and Spanish are prevalent already.

WRIB/Providence is an AM daytimer with ethnic; not aware of any ethnic FMs there.

There used to be 102.7 Radio Festival WAKX Naragasset (sp?), Rhode Island. It played Portugese music. (in an area where there's not much of a Portugese Population). From what I've read it's now playing a mix of Jazz and Folk music.

I'm pretty sure we can all agree that there are a lot of AM stations with ethnic formats; if we could refrain from listing every AM we are aware of, I believe we can keep to the original question much better.

Understood, but I was commenting on the original post claiming there was an ethnic FM in Providence. There's not... and 97-something far to the east doesn't count.

FM Spanish in Omaha, Nebraska and some Chinese outfit doing LP in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Multicultural Radio

While on the subject of the ethnic format, what exactly is the business model of Multicultural other than serving non-English-, and often non-Spanish, -language formats? What proportion of stations are traditional in the sense that they sell ads, etc., and how many are brokered time mutliethnic like (IIRC) WPAT? Are they all available for LMA; AAR had KBLA and WNTD... is that a typical way of operating for them?

I'm familiar with some of their stations in the top 2 or 3 markets, but their website provides little other info.

You have pretty much hit the nail on the head. All of Multicultural's stations carry brokered non-English programming. The Air America situation was interesting as the stations weren't LMA'd, but the programming aired as a brokered time buy. Had it been a LMA, Multicultural wouldn't have been able to toss them off the air as quickly as they did when the checks bounced.

I believe Multicultural has arrangements to carry network programming from Mexican broadcasters in any timeslots they haven't sold. At least that appears to be the case with KBLA.
______________
