Unbelievable...a miracle...I bought it, however, it was labeled as an "open box item." They said this means it was probably a return (it came with batteries already installed from the owner).
I asked if they had other E5's, and they didn't at this location (a mall in Henderson, NV). However they said, "We are closing a lot of radios out." And, the sticker also said originally $99 ($114+ on the net for the E5, $149 for the equivalent Grundig G5).
I don't know if there is anything "defective" from the former owner. The two things so far - 1) the audio processing is horrible on all bands, blunted, as if the previous owner stepped on the speaker, and 2) the tuning knob seems loose, and sometimes it doesn't turn on and off and then on again when you push the sleep button.
Other than these issue, for AM the sensitivity seems similar to the good old Radio Shack DX-375 from 1996. However, the E5 has the wide/narrow feature - and that is a HUGE advantage that's always blocked my DXing capabilities. AND, the SSB - I've never had that before.
Also, Radio Shack still has the old Grundig S350 for $99. Will they knock that one down and replace it with the new model from the other company? I got the Radio Shack DX399 in 2002 for $39.99 (reg = $150 or so). Radio Shack seems to routinely knock clearance prices in all categories of merchandise to 75% or more.
Also, another radio that doesn't get much press is the good old Sony AM/FM/TV/Weather ICF-36. Target was clearing box after box of them out for just $12 this fall (in Henderson, NV). It's the most sensitive analog AM I have, but it could be more selective.
Anyway...check out Sharper Image for the E5 - I have no idea but good luck if you try. reply if you find one.
