I'm told the ETSU basketball broadcasts will move from WKOS, where they had been for the last couple of years, to a simulcast on WJCW and WXSM.
I found this very interesting because I wanted to know the particulars of this move. Is this the desire of ETSU or the powers that be on Free Hill Rd?
There have been many things in the past on ETSU broadcasts that have made Bucs fans think they have been a redheaded stepchild at Free Hill Rd. Pre-empting the broadcasts a couple of years after the Mister Jennings era for high school broadcasts. The idea that the Bucs should be talked about more on talk shows. King on The Monster (WXSM) instead of ETSU in recent seasons.
And from what I've been told, when the games were on WKOS the powers that be were asking the broadcasts to end almost immediately after the game. Nevermind the Bucs were giving the station roughly $30,000 to air the games and there is no way they would get that sponsorship money at 10:00 p.m. from anyone else.
But to my way of thinking, this is a positive move. While I like The Dennis Miller show at nights on WJCW- but it's become the modern day Dean Edell Show for them. They don't know how to sell it but the syndicators insist it stay on the air if they want the Limbaughs, Hannitys, and Gallaghers.
Still, the Bucs will be on a higher rated station with a sports talk format and their old home. The coverage area with the simulcast will be the same as it was- even greater if the games are in the day.
And for once, maybe I'll know when the coaches show is on. I never would tune in to it on WKOS because it was never promoted on the sports and talk stations I listen to- that their fans listen to.
But here are the other questions-
Where do the UT basketball games go? Are they dropped altogether? Or move to WQUT with football?
Is John Stephens going to replace Don Helman as the ETSU women's play-by-play announcer? And if so- why?
Is there any harder working- and less appriciated- talent in the area than Don Helman?
Were there any other stations offered the broadcasts?
And will this be beneficial for the parties in question?
