Evaluating Columbus CHR Radio

I reside in Dayton, but I'm in Columbus visiting family for 2 weeks and I got a chance to hear so much good radio. CHR is contemporary hit radio which the stations I've evaluated play... the hits for their format.

First of all, WNCI 97.9 has not sounded this good in years. They've refreshed their recurrent and gold product. They've added song intros. They have excellent jingles and imaging that overlap those intros. Their legal ID is strong. Even though they have Seacrest and simulcasted D&J in the morning, it's hard to tell with how customized it sounds for Columbus. I give the credit to Tony Florentino and Sean Cage who I know has an influence on the music. GREAT JOB CLEAR CHANEL!

Power 107.5 also sounds good! I know, a lot of people love risky Urban stations, and although those are good, I have to say Power is taking risks with putting such songs as Yeah Ya Know (Takers) by T.I. and Love The Way You Lie by Eminem & Rihanna in heavy rotation. They are back to playing a lot of recurrent and gold product as well and that helps make them listenable. It's not the same songs over and over. Although I miss them as a Rhythmic, they found their Urban niche. They may have to lean more rhythmic if PPM shows bad results though. Power is also customized to Columbus with their music and hot imaging. Not to mention, they are more interactive than ever with their new site @ mycolumbuspower.com and text/e-mail requests. Good work to J.D. Kunes who I don't know much about.

Mix 107.9 - Two words. Adult CHR. They are definitely following their positioner with "Today's Best Mix" with less 80s and the best mix of hit music. I spoke with T.J. Holland and he's looking to find his niche with Mix as well. The imaging is great as is the music mix. He's adding new stuff in there weekly. I wish he would drop Billy Bush and grab someone live and local to go against Sean Cage. However, it's hard to compete on such a bad signal. The signal is good north and also in cars. I can't pick it up on my walkman for nothing though! I hope Saga can get an upgrade because Hot AC is probably their best bet at 107.9 - Mix 1079 has to be Columbus' Hit Music Alternative.

Gen X Radio 106.7 isn't really "contemporary hit radio" but it sure does grab my attention. Good work with that music mix. It's in need for more imaging though. However, it took Florentino awhile to get new imaging on Mix 1079 after that debuted. ;)

It's a lot of fun to listen to the radio in Columbus. I'd love a Rhythmic station to enter the scene, but not getting my hopes up. It's possibly with PPM alive now.

Thoughts?

Zellner will keep Gen X simple for awhile. New imaging will come along eventually. Personally, I like it so far, and I even listen to it through static from where I live. I've been waiting for a 90s-based station for years, ever since I first heard XM Radio's 90s on 9 way back in the early 2000s at a Best Buy listening station. Good thing I never bought one.

Overall, 106.7 sure sounds on the right track music-wise. It's great to hear. One thing that does make me go "hmmm..." is some of the edgier hip-hop that seems to be played mostly at nights -- especially given that NCI steered WAAYY clear of this stuff when it was new.

I think as the station evolves the library will get bigger. I've heard many songs on consecutive days and that's something to expect in its infancy. Gin and Juice comes to mind. This morning I had a good chuckle when it played SKi Lo "I Wish."

My hope is they go softer on the songs from around 9a-7p, gradually getting hotter. Then play the stuff 106.3 and 107.5 were playing back in the day. You could even through some of the modern rock hits in from the 7p-9a time.

Why daypart? Just play it all. Columbus has been such a soft and safe radio market for so long, it's time for a change. This format is the perfect chance to change it.

I guess some of the hip-hop is too risky for the office, lol. I like it a lot but my personal favorite in Columbus is Mix 1079.

why is playing hip hop too risky!

and power 107.5 is getting a little better. but still they are a shitty station compare to down south radio station. and cin and cleveland!

**** a CMR! TURN THAT BITCH INTO A FULL URBAN HIP-HOP/RNB STATION!

FOR GOD'S SAKE THAT THE ONLY RAP STATION WE HAVE!

lovejamminoldies is talking about a station not wanting to play hip hop/rap during the day to keep the station office-friendly. He didn't mean it was risky period. We'll see what Zellner does from here.
If you want to listen to a station from those other cities, fire up the ol' computer and stream them.

WNCI is very good for top40. Listen to 107.1 in Cincie and 94.5 Dayton, those are really bad.
107.9 is good for 80s 90s and now.
106.7 for good ole 90s.

I HATE new top40 though and I'm almost 26 years old. WNCI is done well but I won't sit thru the music.

WNCI is the best CHR in the state of Ohio.

KISS 107 Cinci is better than Channel 945 Dayton because 945 is Premium Choice CHR... Kiss 107 is pretty repetitive.
