Evanov aims for ten

Sorry, I was going by what was written in the article:

"Currently, Evanov operates nine radio stations in southern Ontario, including Z103.5 in Toronto, The Jewel 88.5 in Newmarket and AM 1380 in Brantford."

Without counting in the other stations they also own other places outside of Ontario.

Evanov's 'Jewel' from Alexandria ON (CKHK) paid a rare visit on my dial (pushing out myFM's Arnprior signal off the 107.7 frequency) for a time. It has to be the must unique of the Jewel family, having francophone 'souvenirs' in the rotation.

Sticking with The Jewel for a moment, although I live 80 km south of Ottawa, I cannot pick up The Jewel's 98.5 signal, as it gets the squeeze from Kingston's much more powerful CFLY (98.3) and local WPAC (98.7) just across the river, in Ogdensburg NY.

Evanov’s request for council’s support drew criticism from Moose FM morning show hosts Mike Fry and Wendy Gray.

“We don’t want to leave council with anyone thinking we’re against new competition; competition in our market will only strengthen us as broadcasters,” she said. “But as the economy recovers from the recession, what we are concerned about is the direct economic impact another radio station will have on the 13 employees that we have at (The Moose).”

That was a really shameful, unprofessional statement made on CFBG (Moose Bracebridge) mentioned in the article. The economy can't recover without jobs being created, and that is what Evanov is trying to do. Evanov also appears to be attempting to serve an underserved niche market: 45+ radio listeners in a particular part of Muskoka. If I were an advertiser on any of Haliburton's stations, I'd be threatening to pull my advertising about now. I wouldn't want my brand being associated with that kind of whining.

Having spent a lot of time in Muskoka Lakes over the years, the area does need a more local radio station than what it currently receives. Much of Muskoka Lakes is near the outer 500mV/m contours of the stations available there, including the Moose stations and some Barrie-area stations. But as is typical in Canada, established broadcasters are acting like a bunch of 5-year-olds. If they're afraid of losses at their existing stations, maybe they should be looking at the quality of their operations. Haliburton already has the only two commercial radio stations in Muskoka; they should let someone else have a shot.

This kind of Kindergarten bickering is what I like least about Canadian broadcasting.
