Evansville ratings.

Wow, the Wolf really took a bite out of that rabbit! And Regent looks like a bunch of %^$^&$^& as WYNG's new format actually goes down! Mabye if they had promoted WYNG Country instead of flipping it to something that wasn't proven in Evansville 94.9 would look, oh, golden?

Nice Books for WSTO and WIKY. And WYFX shows with a, well, look at R&R for more info on that. When I was there, 106.7 had a really crappy signal in Evansville.

WJLT doubles it share, but is Regent smart enough to keep it?

You know, GBF-FM gets pretty good numbers, but one wonders what they would get with a GOOD signal. Mabye WGBF should move to 94.9? Sure, it still might be "marginal" but at least the North and Western parts would have better coverage.

WEOA near the 4. For people who say it's dead, it sure does something. And I sure as hell don't see anybody pulling even a 2 with anything else on 1400.

So what does this book prove? One, never move a heritage country station from a frequency, piss on it, flip it thinking a sports station will do better, because it won't. Two, just because you think WIKY needs competition, it don't. WJLT proved that. And three, don't count on one book to say that you have success. The Wolf, Superhits, and everyone else better work that @$$ to keep the good books coming.

I am out. Take it from here.<P ID="signature">______________

Thoughts/observations:

How about Regent buying WAKO-FM in Lawrenceville, IL at 103.1 and fillling in some of the gaps? Unless they simulcast, I don't see GBF-FM moving the format to 94.9. You'd think Regent would be smart enough to learn from the WYNG fiasco. Then again, maybe not.

When is someone with half a radio brain going to buy WRAY-FM? They have a killer signal, but utilize about 30% of it in their programming. IMHO, that could be a top 5 or 6 station if someone knew what they were doing with it.

Superhits & Wolf will both flatten out in the Fall book. The curiosity factor will be over and everyone will settle back into their old habits.

Buying WAKO won't do it. There's a 102.9 with a tower site in Breckrenridge County, Kentucky and a 103.3 in Santa Claus that will keep 103.1 from moving much closer. A power upgrade is a longshot as well.

A little history on 94.9. Fifteen years ago when it was WRBT, there was a plan to move 94.9's tower to the Vanderburgh-Gibson County line. By the time the owner got the ball rolling the Construction Permit for 94.7 Philpot, KY had been granted.

There was a story ten years ago that WYNG's owner (Pinnacle, I believe) considered purchasing WRAY-FM 98.1. WYNG was spinning down the ratings due to newcomer WKDQ and the after effects of the "Y-105" fiasco(details at another time). They felt WYNG at 98.1 would put them on the better part of the dial between WBKR and WKDQ. The deal fell through.

WRAY is a full service mom and pop station, they won't sell unless they want to retire. It's been a while since I checked county by county ratings, but WRAY usually owns radio listenership in Gibson County.

Look a little closer. A couple of my former employers, Premier Radio/Cumulus, had a talk station on 1400 that regularly got at least a 7 and has come close to an 11 several times in KFRU.

> So what does this book prove? One, never move a heritage

Actually, we don't know that. We know it didn't do better in the ratings, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not doing better. Sports is usually going to bill better than classic country. So, ESPN 94.9 might be an improvement in that department, though I really liked Gold Wyng 95.

> Two, just because you think WIKY needs competition, it
> don't. WJLT proved that.

I don't know about that either. WJLT was a pretty poor effort at competition for WIKY. It was cheaply run, and it sounded cheaply run. I'm not so sure AC wouldn't have been successful, maybe not at beating WIKY but cutting into it enough to be profitable, had Regent really given it a good effort.

> And three, don't count on one book

And I agree with you here. One book rarely says success or failure.

The ratings have arrived and the anxiety is over or just beginning. Here is another biased spin of the latest ratings

WIKY-Consistency pays off for the gang at “Xanadu”, high atop Mount Engelbrecht. They celebrate once again as everything seems to work. Don’t screw it up!

WKDQ-The Wolf chewed off a couple of their carrots, but this too shall pass. It just means you have to work a little harder reinforcing who are and what you do. Most of all remember 100,000 watts has better penetration downtown than 3,200 watts ERP does emanating from way out in Warrick County.

WSTO-Hot 96 has finally purged itself of the Brill Media trade and the after effects of its jackass management. Congratulations.

WJLT-After South Central ditched the oldies format for the “Wolf”, it was a given Regent would change “Light Rock with Less Talk, Lite 105.3” to oldies. Let’s face it, John Tesh tried, but in “The River City”, Delilah wears the balls. The former WJPS audience found 105.3, as did a bunch more, and life is good at the corner of Highway 41 and Lincoln Avenue. It was a surprise they didn’t keep Sam Yates for the format, but such is life. Personal note: Cindy Patrick is doing well programming Oldies 105.3, but the radio geek living inside me wonders what life would be like if Johnny Randolph had been in the building when the format change happened. Imagine the possibilities!

WLFW-Nice debut, now you have to maintain it. Remember your weakness is your lack of penetration, signal that is, and WKDQ has you beat.

WABX-Just keep updating “The Babe of the Day” on your website.

WDKS-Brill Media was the best thing to happen to Kiss. Their bastardization of WSTO basically handed Kiss an audience and eventually beat the trade heavy WSTO. South Central has reinvented 96.1 and rest is in the numbers. Don’t give up quite yet. It’s just back to the drawing board.

WGBF-FM- Nothing to see here, let’s move on.

WEOA- Here is a music intensive station transmitting to receivers producing audio bandwidth that is less than a cell phone and they have ratings? What would happen if you put this on FM? Oh well, I’ll guess we’ll never know.

WGBF-AM-Obviously the ratings fall is due to a Liberal conspiracy.

WSON-Henry Lackey could care less about anything other than what concerns Henderson. Best of all he’s having a blast doing local radio. He gets a preset on my car radio just so I can hear AM stereo.

WYXY-The Lord works in mysterious ways.

WBKR-They own a chunk of the Western Kentucky TSA, any Evansville numbers are a sweet bonus.

WKTG-Power Rock has a few fans in the metro, way to go.

WYNG-Even in mono and using ESPN programming, 94.9 can’t make much of a dent in metro. Maybe the next book will be better.

WQXQ-It’s one of the biggest signals in the area and it just sits there. Such potential wasted.

We start the madness again September 22, the fall book.

I'm biased too, and a Liberal. Can you actually believe I have Evansville roots(I was born there in 1977)

Yeah, they are reliable. Exciting, no. But then again, soccer moms don't want exciting. Well, Radio that is.

Mabye WKDQ needs fresh blood? I mean, it's cool that Bill has worked in Evansville for over 30 years and I apreciate his contributions and such, but mabye it's time for a slightly younger WKDQ.

No kidding. A station that sounded so horrible, and someone I wrote off years ago has actually been making moves to sound better and it's paid off!

It's not over until the next book. I just wish there was this much competition in formats I would listen to in Evansville, like AC, Urban, CHR/Pop/Rhythmic/Dance, New Rock, etc etc.
>

Well, they pretty much own the classic Rock field. WKTG is too far out to make a dent.

Well, I've said it before and I'll get somebody going "dude, you know NOTHING about this market" but Regent should explore the idea of a Rhythmic CHR(Hip Hop, R&B, mabye Old Skool, mabye a little pop/dance). There is a 6-7% black population and didn't people on this board already say that Kiss was regarded as the black station anyways? Well, why not go full blown and serve them? And yes, white kids would listen too. It's about the only thing I see working on 106.1. They've been down the Talk and Hot AC road already and the signal covers Evansville efficently.

Or MOVE GBF to 106.1 and put a Urban on 103.1, as 103.1 might get a signal into the black area which is west of 41 and borders the Washington/Lincoln Area.
>

I'd agree except people whine about the lack of signal particulary north of Diamond Ave.

I think we will know. We just have to change some conservitive attitudes.

And it's all syndicated. The only employees that WGBF-AM have might be a engineer and mabye the Janitor.
>

Well, he's not wasting a frequency unlike Regent. And there is still a sizable senior population still in Evansville.
>
> WYXY-The Lord works in mysterious ways.

Yeah, but they can do better. I would have thought this station would be tailored made for a market like Evansville as there are a lotta christians and churches and those christians who don't listen to WIKY or WKDQ and are white would have picked this station as a primary station. Would have expected a 4 or 5 out of this station.

Those 74 ratings and todays ratings all tell a story. BKR is as steady as she goes.

Just a few though. Wonder if they should start leaning more new rock?

Agreed! Satellite on a 100kw signal? I would expect that in Colby KS, but In Evansville?

What's with the whole white/black refrences and stereotypes and what relevance does that really have with the CCM format or for that matter any of the formats?

It goes to show that if you spend the money you'll get the numbers. KDQ, Oldies, Wolf and WIKY all ran tv, mailers and boards. You couldn't get away from any of them. I would have been more suprised if one of them didn't have a good book.

WHAT WAS "Y-105" IN EVANSVILLE ON WYNG?
