EVB Live at 4pm Starting 8/1

KPNX is running commercials for a new show called "EVB Live", an hour long show, at 4pm. The hosts will be Tram Mai, Scott Light, and Caribe Devine. I guess this spells the end of 12 News Valley Dish! But, there are two key questions: Will Scott continue his role as morning anchor? Will Caribe continue as weekend weather anchor or will she switch with Rob Carlmark and become the noon weather anchor and co-host of "EVB Live"?

Wow, Tara's demotion and now this! Things are definitely heating up around here... :D

I will hold my judgement until I have the opportunity to watch the show in August. Another early evening newscast is being killed at Channel 12, first goes 4:30 p.m. now goes the 5:00 p.m.

I do have a few thoughts on what you mentioned formeraa. I haven't watched Now@9 in a long time, but part of what I believe makes that show successful is NOW@9 has strong personalities in Amber, Kirk, Rebecca & Susan. They all do well on their feet and are able to stay on top of things and keep things moving, which makes the show work well. It is easy to see when a sub anchor is filling in how the chemistry is just not there. So easy to judge when it is not me on the screen, but that is the reality in my world of that show.

If either Tram, Caribe, or Scott are not able to be quick on their feet and begin to stumble this show will struggle to succeed. Now obviously I am not aware of how the economics of a show like this works, I keep hearing it is so much cheaper to have all these new local shows since they are already being paid to be there. I wonder if they will incorporate parts of Valley Dish into the show. I do not watch Valley Dish regularly, but I do enjoy seeing everyday folks come on and share their food skills.

I realize it is tempting to want to duplicate, imitate other shows that are deemed successful, but I'm a big fan of originality or making it your own. I am just not sure if copying the success of NOW@9 as you and the article suggest formeraa is really the best idea. I don't wanna be a downer, just trying to be realistic. Valley Dish was a unique take on a lifestyle/cooking show. My name is also not John Misner and I am not making executive decisions for Gannet Phoenix division.

I wish them good luck and am sure I will be back on here come August when I've had the opportunity to view the show and share my views, thoughts on the show and how in my opinion it is working for them.

I like you formeraa wonder those same questions about the shake up of anchor roles and who if anyone replaces Scott in the mornings.

Charlie.

Charlie --

It is abundantly clear that 12 News is struggling to re-gain its "news superiority" that it lost after NBC's Jay Leno fiasco and years of Gannett cost-cutting. I'm just not sure that "EVB Live" is going to do it. Basically, it means that 12 News is down to 2 serious half-hours of news -- the Arizona Nightly News at 6pm and 12 News at 10pm. I wonder how Lin Sue and Mark feel about their reduced air time! It's basically going to be Cooney and Curtis at 6 and 10, with Tram, Scott, and Caribe from 4-5:30pm. I can't imagine that they're going to ask Scott to come in at 4:30am and 4pm. That seems like a long day!

I am a big fan of Now@9 and I think I may just have to start checking out EVB Live. Whether people want to admit it or not, Social News is the way to go in 2011. I get bored just watching the usual news format but if you toss in tweets, facebook comments, round table discussion.. that holds my attention much more than local news, national news, weather, feel good story, sports, another check of weather and seeya later ;-)

I will be interested to see how their "flow" looks compared to Now@9

Agreed on the social media in 2011! I wonder if EVB Live is going to try to get newsmakers like 12 News "Lunchcast". I, too, like [email protected] the format translate to afternoon/evening time periods? I just wish that there was local news at 7pm in Phoenix. I would really enjoy a newsy version of Now@9 at 7pm on the Go-AZ weather channel or EVB live on the 12 News WeatherPlus channel

Okay, EVB Live has a Facebook page. Scott Light mentions there that he will no longer anchor the morning news. Brahm Resnick could easily slip into the morning anchor role (although I'm not sure what happens to "12 News Lunchcast" at that point. I guess Joe Dana is another possibility.

Another addition to the EVB Live Facebook page is the EVB Live Ensemble team. It looks like Gannett is seriously investing in this show. There appear to be 3 or 4 brand new reporters/MMJs assigned to EVB Live. That's quite an investment after years of cost-cutting here in Phoenix!

Investment and MMJ should not be used in the same sentence. Any successful local news will boil down to relevant content to the viewers. If they have great content that is not constant rehash and their anchor team is pleasant, they have a chance. They should still have Ellen as a lead in also which is a plus.

Re-read my post. I did not use investment and MMJ in the SAME sentence. They were used in 2 consecutive sentences! ;D

Seriously, though, you are absolutely right. It is all about content, but my point was that they are adding staff rather than stretching the existing staff to cover the show. This should not only give EVB Live a fighting chance, but also other 12 News shows will continue to be "fully" staffed.

Went to EVB Facebook page. Very lively and seems like they are going to have fun.

I had to smile when Scott Light posted that Tram Mai told him to get a new wardrobe because there wouldn't be any neck ties. Is that supposed to mean that this program is "different" from other news programs? Personally, I like to see newsmen in jackets and ties. I can understand if you're working in the field and it's hot, but in studio there should be a professional look.

Still more cheap airtime filled with banter and fluff, cooking, and Amy Winehouse/Charlie Sheen stories.

Seems to me they are taking the average morning show and copying it throughout the day to avoid spending money on anything worthwhile.

Because nobody under 50 will sit down and watch a traditional newscast with an anchor droning on and on about boring things, perhaps? News doesn't have to be boring, but it should be topical. Could you imagine running a 1979 newscast in 2011 -- with the possible exception of CBS Sunday Morning?

I am so done with the newscasts I grew up with in the 80s. Too boring, we are on the go, have apps and will travel LOL. I want my news fresh, new, trending, comments, being social etc. I am sorry if some "oldies" can't take it but I love the new look to news that is coming to phoenix.

I'm not sure about the "under 50" comment but if it is true then one or both of the following must change:

1. News delivery must return to the "Cronkite" formula that delivered the hard news, briefly but with enough details for understanding and dropping the media princes and princesses who love time in front of the camera. As I write this I am watching NBC Nightly news and seeing what is wrong.

2. News content must return to the days of true news and not "dancing bear" stories and the death of drug users.

If news producers continue to chase the Gen Xers because "they won't watch hard news" our country is in for very rough times. And adding repetitious repeats and cooking segments in a "news" program demeans the delivery and the content.

Well I see you "got" my post in another thread on iPad@9. :D

That was the funniest quote I've seen in a long time! :D iPad@9, I love it!!! :D

Well I DVR the first show of EVB live and hmmm I have mixed feelings about it. It was not so IPAD heavy as everyone was predicting. Pretty much a show with alot of stuff in it but maybe they just have to work out the flow of the show. Overall not bad but not sure what to make of it yet.

Similar thoughts here. EVB Live was more exciting than the "paid" shows like Arizona Midday, Lifestyles A to Z, or Sonoran Living, but not quite the social media level of iPad@9 :D In some ways, EVB Live reminds me a bit of Saturday GMAZ with a glitzy set and more prominent anchors. I noticed that Cooney got her time with news updates. So far, EVB Live would be great background noise while preparing dinner -- interesting, but not yet compelling.

Finally back in the Valley of the Sun and already missing the coolness of Lake Michigan and fresh cold water to swim. Oh well at least no snow. So I had the chance to stumble upon EVB Live and I do not get the show. I watched for maybe 15 minutes at most, just not working for me. I do not get it and it just seems awkward. I really want to get better about complaining and if I don't have anything nice to say so I should not say anything at all but I really miss the Valley Dish. I thought it was unique and lighthearted and fun to learn from prof. chefs and novices as well. It fit Tram's personality so well, IMHO. This just seems like a mess. Prediction: I do not think this show will last long, just not working. Maybe cheaper than syndication. NOW@9 is unique and works cause they move at fast pace. This show just seems like the Tram and Scott Show with news updates provided by Lin Sue and weather featuring Caribe.

I will not be watching any more of this show.

Charles.

P.S. The 70s called and they want their shag carpeting and swivel table and chairs back!
