Roanoke Even MORE Up in the Air

"CW stations will be required to broadcast network programming in high-definition, the letter says."

Well, that puts WBVA in Roanoke out of the picture. And I don't know if WDRL will be able to do it.

I wonder if Roanoke will even HAVE a The CW affiliate after this?

Yeah---Roanoke will have CW---either on WBVA or WDBJ-DT2. Unfortunately, WDRL has not been able to get itself together, so they are an outside chance. What about---WPXR--if someone could get that station away from PAX, they might be able to do something..

They mean that the network will send out a simulcast of their programming on a separate HD feed. It's the station who has the option of taking the signal or not, as far as I know.<P ID="signature">______________

Could CW possibly go to WFXR or WJPR? Then there would be a CW21 or CW27 and then a FOX21 or FOX27.

WHY?

Why does 21 & 27 broadcast the same thing anyway? Reason I ask, back in 1986 a group of us went to the now defunct Lakeside Park in Salem ( just outside of Roanoke ). I remember seeing a billboard right across the street saying that channel 21 is now on the air. Remembering this I would imagine that 21 can been seen in Roanoke unless this has since changed. Why not have a FOX21 and a CW27?

Neither WBVA nor WDBJ-DT can do HD for the CW, so they're pretty much out of the picture unless an exception is made in Roanoke.

They claim that there are places where WJPR can be seen that WFXR can't. I have yet to find one of those places. WFXR (then-WVFT) was originally bought to repeat the poor signal of WJPR.

Some will say otherwise, but WJPR's signal is awful. Running a peanut-shaped directional pattern that puts too much signal over Lynchburg (signal from WFXR looks better in Lynchburg to me due to WJPR ghosting and such) and doesn't totally cover Roanoke due to mountains, puts almost no signal toward Danville, or north into the mountains where a signal boost might actually be needed.

WFXR should be the Fox station as Fox 27, as the original split plan indicated. However, I think it would violate FCC rules to split them up. WDBJ can't buy WPXR due to those rules. Right now, Grant Media has a waiver of the rules because they claim that WJPR and WFXR fill in each others holes in coverage.

I have a feeling that these rules will change once they find out that many of these potential CW stations don't want to pay to broadcast a network that hasn't proven its success yet. And, as for the "time compression," that may mean no CW for Meredith (who has admitted to using this to add more local spots) in Kansas City and Chattanooga.

This is the first I've heard about the CW broadcasting Saturday 3 to 5, weekday mornings, Saturday nights, and weeknights at 11 Eastern. Adding Saturday night would enable the CW to keep a couple more shows from UPN and the WB, but will anyone be watching? And what would they plan on showing Saturday 3 to 5 and weeknights at 11 Eastern?
