Evolution 101.7 and commercials

Hi all, just a question out of shear curiosity about this station (which sounds great so far btw!!)... I was wondering how a station like this would intend on bringing in revenue down the line without any commercials/advertisers? Do you guys think commercials will begin on this station at some point? It just dawned on me today, that although it's a terrestrial station, there's no commercials at all.. how does that work?

Commercials will probably start later this month. Enjoy it while it lasts. The Harbor was commercial free for 2 months.

Would be curious to see the PPM ratings on this station once they come out.

Clear Channel should have brought Club Phusion to FM instead of Evolution. It would help them cover all aspects of pop music, and they could sell Kiss, Jamn, and 101.7 as a package to crush Amp in every direction.

They are also looking for a Sales manager. That station is going to be one tough sell. My guess is your are going to see a lot of Kiss and Jamin buys receiving bonus spots on 101.7

CC should not have many problems selling ads on Evolution. This station is going to command a very respectable share of some of the best college students in the nation. If a sales rep can't get creative enough to package that to advertisers, they have no place in the business.

I'll be surprised if 101.7 is the same format by this time next year. If WFNX couldn't get a 2.0, why would this format?

I won't, especially because WFNX had (like it or not) a format that was aging. A good take on that format, but an aging one none the less.
The college age listener of 2013 is more likely to listen to an Evolution than a FNX format (The college kid of 1988...different story)

Pariho did talk about WFNX aging. I'm not in Boston but if the format was aging I'll take his word for it.

But right now WNTI, EDM is riding high and CC took that chance with it. IF this format does leave, aside from non billing, it would be that the EDM sound in itself just didn't work (just as it failed in Denver). You could get away with Evolution in Boston but quite honestly, you couldn't have an Evolution style station in New York City because the dance music crowd down here is just too diversified. You can have aspects of it...but not a full time format.

But advertising is essential, and it's going to take more than just the clubs to support it.

I don't know... I think WFNX had fatigue on the format, but more and more hits are crossing over from Alternative this past year. WFNX was meandering and trying to find itself for the last year or so. It "sort of" lives on with the old staff on RadioBDC.com

I know lots of college kids (did contract work at one in Boston last year) and EDM isn't as big as you may think it is with them. There is a subset of students that are in to it, but for the most part they're either listening to rock, CHR or Hip Hop.

Some of these "stars" that are talked about are only stars in their own circle. Other than Deadmau5 or Skrillex, who's a "big star" that people would know if they weren't hard core into the music?

I know you support a dance station in every market, but it takes more than a small group of P1's to make a station successful. Ask WFNX about that. You need P2's and P3's to bolster your numbers, and hopefully convert more of them to P1's as time goes on to bolster your TSL.

Heard a few commercials this morning while driving around 8 AM. One for Newbury Comics and another one for Salter School.

I guess it was only a matter of time

Hearing Newbury Comics spots on 101.7 will almost be nostalgic.

Newbury Comics is also one of the only two local ads I have heard on WEEI-AM since the flip. (Don't listen much, just for a few minutes during commute and weekends.) The Newbury Comics ad was interesting because it said something like "Newbury Comics is proud to be a sponsor of ESPN on WEEI." Only heard it once though.
