Ex-CBS Radio Exec: O&A Originally "Shot Down" As Stern Replacement

On Tuesday, Howard Stern had former CBS Radio executive Rob Burnett on his show as a guest to discuss the process of replacing Stern once he left for satellite radio, leading Burnett to eventually hire David Lee Roth, whom he admitted was his "78th choice" to replace him, after such personalities like Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and even Jon Stewart, all of whom passed on the job offer. Burnett admits at one point that the possibility of Opie & Anthony replacing Stern in January 2006 was considered, but it was "shot down immediately" by the company.

"You hate them, they hate you but they're radio guys who can do a four hour radio show," Burnett told Stern, who responded, "I don't hate anyone in radio but they're not my friends."

O&A eventually replaced David Lee Roth on 92.3 FM (then WFNY-FM "Free-FM") after 3 1/2 months.

They also talk about the "Free-FM" concept, which Stern thought was a jab at him because he was going to satellite radio, which requires subscriptions, and "you didn't have to pay for" listening to terrestrial radio.

A listener transcribed the segment; you can read it here:

FYI: Rob Burnett currently operates the Internet entertainment station MyDamnChannel.com.

Regardless, it wasn't all bad. He did a heck of a job adding Adam Carolla.

Carolla was the most successful of the three regional hosts originally tapped to replace Stern in 2006 with the advent of "Free-FM."

Rover, the jock who started in radio at age 18 "on a dare" (or so he says in his bio) was brought from Cleveland to Chicago to do a show for a handful of stations. Before long, he would return to Cleveland where he now does a local show.

And DLR, of course, we all know what happened to him.

You know, I never understood this one. Carolla said on his last show that he was offered a position to do this show from NYC as soon as he found out that 97.1 flipping was a sure thing. He also said the offer was pulled off the table once CBS decided the station he was going to in NYC was flipping. So was he going to replace O & A? Were they attempting FM Talk part III?
