ex-jocks on sports radio

My car radio is constantly on sports talk and it annoys me when ex-jocks turned hosts don't do their homework. For example, last week ron and ian were talking about back-up quarterbacks when the topic of tom brady comes up. Ian, the ex-jock, chimes in with scott zolak is brady's back-up - uh, zolak hasn't been on the patriots since pete carroll left about six years ago. This is just one example and ian is certainly better than the ex-jock who precedes him - dan silly-o.........is this the best Clear channel can give us that early in the morning????

here's a great example of dan's pre-show homework - when talking about the USF/UCF game he says "Both teams have different reasons for wanting to win this game." Huh? thank you captain obvious.

This is just my two cents - being an ex-jock certainly adds to the discussions in a lot of aspects and some of the guys i hear sound like they do do their homework - i really like denny hocking talking baseball, but it takes more than just showing up when the mike goes on guys.......silly-o to me is just lazy.

Hey There,
I posted this back in May (and it's all still true, what a shame)......
...As foremost a sports radio listener (as well as a 10 year Sports Radio Program Director, 1320 WAMR... The Whammer.) I will throw in my 2 cents about Ron and Ian. I listen to them quite frequently. I also know that Brad Hardin (at least I know he used to, spend time working with these guys) has alot of expectations of this show.
I have listened to this show alot for a number of months. I must admit, I am actually impressed with Ronnie Diaz as a sports talk host. He's consistently getting better. However Ian Beckels is another story. He sounds like a nice enough guy. But too many days, he asks his producer OR Ron, about a sports story (it's like he hasn't even read the paper). Also, if somone calls in and attempts to correct him, he yells them down and they get hng up on. I don't think Ian, does any prep work at all. And if he does, it's not the right kind of prep. He sounds like he is not well prep-ed on a daily basis.
I listen, because I truly respect Ron Diaz and am quite impressed about his transformation into the world of sports... I just hope, when the show gets blown up, that they give him another partner.
I also enjoy Derek on the LOCAL sportscasts. I love how he champions LOCAL high school sports. He's also a very smooth and polished sports anchor, that I enjoy listening too (unlike the train-wreck known as Whitney, in the afternoon).
Just my 2 cents.

I certainly agree that Ian has really backslid. When he first filled in for Chris Thomas he busted his ass to come in prepared. Now he sounds like he's just showing up. It really gets old when you hear someone who's coasting.

Ron's a different story. He's an outstanding radio guy and really knows how to keep a show rolling. However, I get tired of his constant half baked political rants and knee jerk, off the cuff reactions to things. I also have some idea of how he treats the people he works with and it ain't pretty. Unfortunately Ian also has built a rep for being a prick to work with. Whether he got that from Ron or it was there all along I don't know.

Basically to me, you've got two very self absorbed guys and I actually find myself listening at times to Colin Cowherd, just to get away from the same old same old. I really love the WHBO drop "No ex rock jocks faking their way through sports..."

From what I gather their ratings are quite satisfactory and in a way that's a shame, because I think they could do a lot better, but they really have no incentive to improve if the suits are happy with them and they don't have the inner drive to become better. (kind of a metaphor for the whole industry come to think of it)

If I were in charge I would level with them and ask them how good they want to be. They can go the way they're going and as long as the numbers are right they wont' have to do a bit more than they're doing, but if they were willing to take the challenge and really work at it with someone who knows how to direct them and give them the proper feedback (like a really good football or baseball coach) and demand the best from them, there's no telling how good they could be.

For now their show is just three hours of pure self indulgence.

Those who can't, listen constantly on their car radio.

Yo, naughty talker, i do do.....i currently work in radio in this market and have done so for the past 15 years. Rest assured that no matter what the format is or was, i always showed up fully prepared. Another example i heard this morning on the Silly-o show. He was discussing Vinny Testaverde and made a statement along the lines of "i guess he didn't need training camp to show up at age 43 and win a game for the Panthers." If the host had done his homework - he is a former collegiate teammate of Vinny and says they are friends - then he would have known that vinny was in training camp with New England and was let go at the last cut.

I think it's pretty clear that 620 pulls numbers not because of the talent their hosts possess, but because their signal and stations marketing is superior to it's competition. Ron and Ian are a pathetic excuse for a radio show. I agree with others who have mentioned about their lack of prep. They both are probably extremely talented, but it is obvious that these guys don't put in an ounce more effort than they need. Yet they still pull numbers because they have no legit competition. I can't stand the show, but I live in the Sarasota/Bradenton area and they are the only sports talk available for my morning commute so I don't have any other alternative but to listen to the them to get my sports fix.

It's pretty obvious neither of Ron or Ian take criticism very well, because if they ever are taken to task on an opinion they either pull the "hang up on the listener card" or the "our ratings are better than ever" card. For once, I'd love for them to do bring some creativity to their show, and I don't care about the stupid photos your stoner producer put on your web page..

I think there are other ways to say "Let's go to (caller's name)" every time you bring a caller onto the show, especially when you take 50-60 calls. Maybe vary it up a bit, like Alex Trebek does on "Jeopardy!" so that he's not saying "correct" for every correct response.

Also, I know this has nothing to do with the hosts, but the bumper music on their show has gotten VERY old. It is something the production staff needs to work on.

I will be Honest. I used to listen to Ron and Ian and other local hosts, However since I now have XM Radio I will listen there or I listen online to either WFAN, WEEI or WIP, to thier local shows which are really much better. Or online to SNR and Tony Bruno.
