Ex Star Jock To Mornings - 3WS

Jonny Hartwell to become the morning show host on 3WS. Thoughts???

Will he be playing the same boring, restricted playlist? If so, my only reaction is Ho-Hum.

Congratulations to Jonny! Good to see him back in the market. The Clarion Connection continues in Pittsburgh, and Western PA radio.

Happy to see that somebody is getting a job.
Does not make what they did to Merkel right though.

Since I don't really know either guys work, what will be the difference and what would be this reason for this change?

Well it must be true what I was told by someone very close to the situation on Fleet Steet. The 3WS PD is bringing on his former staff from when he was associated with B94 and Star 100.7 (Jonny Hartwell & Kate Harris). Sheri Van Dyke & Mike Frazer better be looking over their shoulders; they might be next to go.

seems to be db59. He will also take 3ws along the same path as he did B94. Straight down. He killed b94 and now he's doing the same to 3ws. B94 went from a top CHR to a few format flips and now down at the bottom of the ratings.

Hartwell may be a nice guy, I don't know. I'm in sales and never had the opportunity to work with him at Star, but I have met and worked with Merkel a few times. And of course, I was an avid listener. He's the real deal. He's a lifelong Pittsburgher, not "20 year Beaver County resident" that Edgar proclaimed in his press release. Who does he think he's fooling? You can't paint a pig and call it a swan. Pittsburghers know when someone is pulling wool over their eyes. Pittsburghers know the real deal/someone who is genuine and Edgar and Hartwell are not the real deal.

very sad time for radio. If I were Sheri and Mike, I'd be looking too. Looks to me like they're going down the Edgar path to nowhere.

I'm taking 3ws off my preset. I've been playing my ipod in the morning since I read the news here. I wish only the best for Merkel.

Does no one know the answer to whether or not there might also be any changes to the playlist? If people weren't listening to Merkel because of the 3WS playlist, why would having a new guy playing the same old songs make any difference?

A new morning jock should have no bearing on the playlist. As of right now, Sheri Van Dyke is the music director, even though I'm sure PD Dave Edgar lays down the law to her as to what gets on the air and what doesn't. As I told by someone there quite awhile ago that the 3WS jocks (other than SVD) have no control over the music selections at all. It is all pre-programmed and followed like the law, other than the Lunchtime Cafe with a few requests allowed and the Sunday Night Oldies Diner (rest in peace RD).

Talk Dude it's not about the music, it's all about hiring your friends. Not about the station, Merkel, or music, it's about keeping your job as a manager.

Then aside from enabling a manager to hire his friends (I did read Raymond's post), how will bringing in a new guy make any difference to anything, unless he's a whole lot cheaper than Merkel was? It's not like people are going to change stations so that they can listen to music they don't like just because of the disc jockey.

Wow, you people really have no idea how radio works. Do you truly believe that any jock picks there own music? Do you truly believe they would want to? A jocks job is to keep whatever is between the songs interesting. The last thing on a jocks mind is, gee I hope I get to play my favorite song today. Alot of us have done this for 20-25-30 years...sorry, but music becomes completely irrelevent after you've played it for years and years. Our job is to act like its the greatest thing in the world to play "25 or 6 to 4" for the 300th time...act...thats all.

Talk Dude that's exactly it, he's a whole lot cheaper than Merkel. One person doing two jobs.

Garnet, I think everyone here on this board certainly knows that it's not the jocks who pick the music. Perhaps you should read through the thread before coming to wrong assumptions.

Then why are there people discussing the possibility of the music changing when a new jock comes in?

It's followed like the law...the law of SUCK!! (Sorry, having a Butt-Head moment there)

When you all say pre-programmed and jocks not picking music...do you mean as in "here's a list, don't play anything not on it" or as in "you will play My Girl at 7:39, Maggie May at 7:41 etc"?

One, no one "discussed" the possibility of the music changing.

This is what I posted:

Did you notice that there were two questions in that post, or did you stop after the first one? Didn't you notice that the first rhetorical question set up the second rhetorical question, which was a way to make the point that it doesn't matter what warm body they stick in the chair to say a few words between records if the records suck.

Of course they aren't going to change their crappy, pathetic little playlist. That's why it was a rhetorical question. And since the obvious answer to the first rhetorical question is the ultra-obvious, "Of course they aren't", then the second rhetorical question also has the same, obvious, answer that anyone with half a brain would automatically respond with, and that's, "Whoever they put on the air in Merkel's place won't make a dime's worth of difference".

Maybe you should learn a little about the use of the English language for communication, especially if you plan to work in radio. Then again, maybe not. It might only confuse you.

It's a good thing they don't have the Bob and Tom show on in Pittsburgh anymore. You'd need someone to explain the "Mr. Obvious" skits to you.

All the music is on a central hard drive, and the jock has a computer screen, a keyboard and a few buttons in front of him/her. You're just following a list... for the most part the only changes you would make would be to skip certain designated songs if your stopsets ran long and you were behind schedule. You can search for songs and play them if you're doing requests. But for the most part, the music is pre-selected and it runs whether you're there or not.
