Exclusive: Sinclair approaches Tribune Media about possible deal - sources

Looks like sometime next week the DOJ will give it's blessing to the merger. Finally will get to know who is buying what stations Fox buying maybe 10 stations which will be re-buying TV stations that they sold 10 years ago a few new stations as well. As for WXMI Fox17 I believe that Meredith 60% or it becomes a Fox O&O at 40% although West Michigan is too small to be an O&O.

About time. This has been going on for what seems like an eternity!

Update the decision of the Sinclair/Tribune deal will be announced February 11th.

Sinclair Broadcast Group has extended the deadline for the U.S. Justice Department’s decision regarding its proposed $3.9 billion acquisition of Tribune Media.

In an SEC filing, Sinclair and Tribune said that they had agreed to not consummate the merger before Jan. 30, 2018, but now that deadline has been moved to Feb. 11, 2018. Tribune and Sinclair also agreed to provide 10 days’ notice to the DOJ before closing the merger.

The development comes after the FCC, which is also evaluating the deal, paused its review process last month.

Sinclair’s bid for Tribune is reportedly on track for DOJ approval, but the company and the government agency are reportedly still discussing Sinclair divesting television stations in order to reduce its market control and national audience reach.

However, as Variety pointed out this week, recent FCC filings from Sinclair suggest the company may be seeking waivers in order to own multiple stations in top markets.

Would Sinclair have to give up The Hartford Courant newspaper here in Connecticut? Tribune presently operates FOX 61 (Hartford) and CW 20 (Waterbury) from said building on Broad Street in Hartford.

Okay...thanks Marc! I wasn't aware of that fact! Still thought it was a monopoly how one entity owned the state's largest newspaper and two network affiliates.

Here is an update and the Sinclair political practices may affect the outcome of the Tribune deal.

Sinclair Broadcast Group is asking its managers, including news directors, to considering contributing to the company’s Political Action Committee, a solicitation that violates journalistic norms, ethicists say.

“Please take the time to evaluate the importance that the Sinclair PAC can have towards benefiting our company and the needs of the industry as a whole,” reads an employee solicitation letter obtained by The Washington Post.

Sinclair’s senior vice president of strategy and policy Rebecca Hanson, told The Post there’s was nothing compromising about the request. The news directors “were solicited as a result of being part of our managerial level, not because of their role in editorial,” she said. “Participation is completely voluntary. There is no corporate pressure to participate and no consequence for not participating. It doesn’t put them in any ethical bind whatsoever.”

I doubt it DOJ is going to approve the merger no matter what it's all but a done deal hoping this finally gets done sometime this week.

I'm not sure DOJ will step in here, but anything could happen. Since Tribune is having money problems that might be a reason for them to not challenge it.

I don't see FCC IG going change a thing the deal will be approved no matter what. Although US Senators talking is going to kill this investigation as they weren't to talk about the FCC IG to the media.

There is no such thing as an FCC IG. They're talking about the Office of Inspector General (OIG), which is an independent government agency. The IG's office inspects and enforces practices as needed, any government office other than the White House. If the OIG's office is investigating practices of the FCC Commissioner? That is potentially a HUGE deal.

There actually IS an FCC inspector general.
