Exitos 9 39 ...

No, the title is not a typo - at least not according to the bus billboard I saw today. In one of the worst station advertisements ever, the Exitos logo features a large number 9 followed by a small 39 following it, giving the impression that it must be at 9.39 on the dial. Or perhaps it looks like an ad for a TV station that broadcasts on two channels, 9 and 39 (my initial reaction). In any case, it is hard to see how anyone looking at it could infer that there is a new station at 93.9 FM.

I previously agreed with Glenn that the Sound freeway billboards that feature the tiny sound logo in the quarter were the worst billboards for a radio station, but this one is far worse. I don't know if they run the station this poorly on air since I don't listen to Spanish radio, but if they do, it is KDL bad.

Can any station marketing REALLY be as bad as KDL's attempt?

Recently I saw one of the new Sound advertisements on the side of an Orange County bus. Their logo was darn small! Talk about not getting your brand across.

Well they have stopped saying "9 39" on the air and now they are saying "Exitos 93.9," but I must say I am very dissapointed in the way GRC has started running the station. Lack of a website to start and the on-air jocks repeating the time and temp after every song was annoying and not how a station should be run in the states. Also the repetition of songs. Their playlist is full of stiffs as DE stated. If I hear Vilma Palma E Vampiros one more time I'm going toooo... GRC is doing a sucky job at running it's 1st U.S. station! No threat whatsoever to DE's KLVE or Entravision's KSSE.

They now have somewhat of a pathetic website up at exitos939.com. It has the e-mails of the jocks, Julio César Cuevas, Holly Tuggy, Nataly Valenzuela and Alberto Santillan.

Are the jocks doing any more now than time and temperature?

I predict the station, with the way things are looking, will likely pull a .08 to 1.1 at best. I hope GRC will be able to get enough return on such a paltry rating. I just don't see it getting much more the way it is being programmed.

The comments on that link provided by Glen is that Viva 107.1 was the best programmed Rock en Español/Top40 spanish station in recent memory and I agree.

I find it very hard to call Viva a rock en español station. It was not even that much of a Top 40, as it always bordered on Hot AC, with a few accent songs.

AMEN!!! I loved Viva 107.1.... They were the first Spanish station in LA to feature underground house, trance & techno on their mixshows. Now Super Estrella plays it, Latino plays it all the time, and even La Nueva plays some dance during Mesclando en vivo..

Yeah too bad Entravision had to take it over from Big City broadcasting.

It was awful when it started, when Roberto Ibarra was PD and Humberto Luna was on mornings.

It was under PD Fernando Pérez that it was best. Fernando is now the PD of KLVE.

Like I said it was a good station at the end when unfortunately Entravision took over with the Superestrella format. Of course you would be bias towards Fernando. We agree Sr. Gleason.

Maybe when Exitos 9 39 fails it can become Kung Pao 9 3 9 "You will listen!"

A Message From The Leader
As we continue to ride the economic roller coaster, radio finds itself in an interesting, yet exciting period. In its existence. Radio has been a viable medium for over 80 years because of its ability to change to reflect the times and the ever-changing tastes and lifestyles of it’s audience. A new era has dawned for the industry and once again we must evaluate where we are and where we are going. With iPods and other music delivery services now available, Radio must continue to change to meet the times. Earlier this year, Max Media undertook the most ambitious project that this industry has ever seen. With the help of Harris Research, the company launched an intensive research project. Hundreds of focus groups were hosted. Ten of thousands of phone interviews were conducted. A direct mail questionnaire was sent nationally to over 1.8 million radio listeners like you. And then the arduous project of looking at the numbers and seeing what they mean and where they point us began. And today, with Hampton Roads as its first market, 100.5 is poised to begin the next generation of terrestrial Radio formats. The research is in and the numbers are irrefutable. The large gaping formatic hole that has been all but ignored? Classic Chinese Hits. This is a very exciting time and we are both humbled and honored to be at the forefront of this new wave of music programming. So please welcome to 100.5, the first of what will soon be a worldwide musical revolution. The Classic Chinese Hits sound of Kung Pao 100.5. Let the music begin!

Interesting concept for stunting, right?

I keep seeing Exitos 93.9 bus stop ads everywhere I go! There's even 2 around my house where there's only 2 bus stops! The bus ads are somewhat weak only advertising the station logo (which in my opinion is hard to understand while driving by because the "9" also represents the "O") and the entire bottom half of the ad shows the company name (Who does that? haha) and the website in smaller letters. Do you think this will make people listen? It seems like this company needs to pull an AMP sized stunt in order to get high numbers in their debut.

It was a stunt all right. Here is the latest according to All Access:

"Tongue firmly in cheek, MAX MEDIA Pres. ERIC MASTEL issued an apology to the HAMPTON ROADS community regarding the format switch from Rock-based MAX-FM to Classic Chinese Hits "KUNG PAO 100.5" this past THURSDAY on WXXM .

[EDIT]

By the way, it was a creative stunt. I actually listened to it on line for about an hour. Well put together imaging just for a stunt.

Exitos has a website up now, just so you know!
AND BOY...do the people from Radio Centro think that the people in the US run on military time and dial their phone numbers in 3-2-2-3 format?

The suits at GRC are complete morons to the way they have started out with KMVN. You can't run a station the way you run it in Swine Flu City opps I mean Mexico City. Military time? Next they'll be telling us it's km/h not miles per hour. ;D At least the jocks are talking more now and not just repeating time and temp after every song. What a disappointment this station is.

The website is nothing really to crow about either. The flat logo and lack of information is really disappointing. By the way, I was checking David's 939exitos.com site. It has over 2500 hits. That's quite a bit on a 9.99 investment.

It seems like they're integrating a syndicated news feature at the top of the hour now. Of course, they were talking about the swine flu! Is this going to be a permanent feature and would it be a smart idea? I think it's a rather interesting idea to air news throughout the day...
