Expanded local talk with OBL death?

RKO running liners by Pete Gustin saying "stay tuned after Tom and Todd for Michele McPhee" with more talk of OBL's killing (pre-empting Laura I); now I hear Avi is in her slot, etc. Maybe they'd even put someone local on after Howie...maybe TKK has someone local after Bower, etc. Don't know if Talk1200 might pre-empt Beck or Hannity or even Rush with someone local...

That's normal, when something big like this happens, getting the local perspective is the right thing to do

850 and 98.5 talking about it, occasionally dipping into sports-related but def. relating to the big news

True re: getting the local viewpoint, etc.--if anything talk radio may get some new listeners today, people curious about it etc. 1200 pretty much doesn't have anyone besides Katz so they're doing the national stuff with Rush, Sean, et al; btw Hannity's national show actually debuted on 9/10/01...

I tuned into RKO at 9pm tonight tonight to see what Savage had to say. Maybe he had talked about OBL for the previous two hours but while I was listening he was talking about buying a new briefcase and the nice meal he had over the weekend.

I was a litlte taken back at how many people called into talk radio during the day to criticize Obama and some even doubt that OBL is dead. There were some real nut jobs on the air today.

Sounds like TKK ran Smerconish as usual at night. Had Savage on for one minute and he mentioned Navy Seals so it prob was a new show.

You were listening to the 3'd hour of the Savage Nation which is reruns or canned interviews.

First 2 hours was Osama coverage wall to wall.

Interesting that an event gives extra motivation to call. It probably triples the .03% call-rate to .09% The regulars are on and they are well practiced and get their point across pretty well (however odious).
The one-shot callers often have a difficult time. Listening to them can get pretty grim. I haven't sampled even one national call-in show this week.

During a dynamic event such as the killing of OBL,when even the administration can't keep on the same page for more than 15 minutes, why would anyone be interested in the uninformed opinions of folks with unknown backgrounds?

As the John Batchelor program, which is about the only one worth listening to if you actually want to learn something, amply demonstrates, callers are easily the most useless and disposable part of any talk program focusing on current events.

That is one thing that intrigues me about some talk radio callers.

If you are a fan of talk radio, then you are at least casually aware of what a (hopefully) articulate human being sounds like.

So why do so many folks call in, unable to string together a coherent sentence? I mean, don't they wait on hold for 20 minutes or more? I think those 20 minutes would be a great time to practice getting your point across, so you don't sound like a total moron in front of the entire audience.

Nothing makes a lively talk show grind to a halt faster than a dimwitted caller that can BARELY sputter out their point, only to have the host ask a followup question that stuns the caller into a state of shock where they simply cannot utter a word for several seconds!

Ugh.

He has a lot of detractors, but JT The Brick at least tells his listeners to be prepared and have their crap together--and be awake and energetic--for their call. Those who aren't quickly get cut off and a recording of him saying TIIIIIIIIIIIIIME! is played (thought it sounds more like TOWWWWWWWWWWWWWN!)
You're right, you wait on line for 20 min and when the time comes you don't have much of anything to offer.
Then there's the old:

HOWIE: "We have time to squeeze one more caller in"
CALLER: "Uh....uh..."
HOWIE" "Turn your radio down please--is it off? OK, go ahead. We're up against a hard
break, you have 20 seconds."
CALLER: "Uh...um, great show uh Howie. First time caller, uh long time listener. So um... you were...
when it um...comes to.."
HOWIE: "Sorry, we're out of time." (gives phone number out again). "I'm Howie Carr."

(then again I have heard callers use their 20 seconds and make the point quickly and
successfully)
