Experience, Knowledge and accountability

There was a time when radio could be counted on to deliver facts as well
as entertain. Kudos to Patrick Callahan who does such a great job on
Oldies 103.3 FM. He played "I'd Love To Change The World" by Ten Years After
in his countdown the other night, one of those hit singles that should be in rotation on Oldies, and should get a bit more attention on Classic Rock radio.
Callahan also knows his stuff, or does great prep.

Barry Scott and Little Walter are also experts in their respective fields.

It is a bit discouraging to see those who have the talent, knowledge and years of experience being relegated to weekend shifts at the expense of the audience radio claims it is so desperate to accomodate.

There's a mantra, especially on this board, "Radio is a business." Yeah,
and in business the consumer gets something in exchange for the service.
Radio, in being a one-way street these days, has shot itself in the foot.

No tears are shed when a jock is fired and when there's evidence that jock didn't care about his audience, just his own ego. Ego is an important thing,
one has to have a good self-image to deal with the public - but too many let it get out of hand. This thread is in dedication to those hard-working, smart, and self-less jocks who care more about the audience than seeing their name in lights.

Also - some good points on the previous thread re: those crossing over.
Brudnoy and his comrades on the Rainbow Bridge could stir things up, but they also had the smarts to back it up.

From one broadcaster who has been in and out of the business (on and off the air) for 3 decades...your post definitely hit close to home!

"Radio is a business" is the official corporate way of saying: "OUR PRODUCT CAN BE AS CRAPPY AS WE WANT IT TO BE PROVIDING WE MAKE A LITTLE MONEY!" 6 months down the road when the big kahunas suddenly discover they aren't making enough money...department heads begin to roll!

Few listeners seem to care if a jock is dismissed....simply because we've become exposed to "fast food and quick turnover!" You can always buy another "HAPPY MEAL" or a 2nd box of fries!

I have often wondered if an on-air "ego" is created by a publicity expert? Or if a jock, talk show host, or newscaster TRULY BELIEVES HE (OR SHE) IS THE "VOICE OF GOD?" I guess if any broadcast talent buys into the latter theory....he or she really DOESN'T UNDERSTAND what GOD is thinking?

All of us are capable of babbling. [Our parents told us this]. But it's too bad so much of it has to come out of a radio speaker? To paraphrase the late dancer-singer, Gene Kelly....."THAT TYPE OF PROGRAMMING IS (NOT) ENTERTAINMENT!"
