Explain XM:s initial success?

Before Stern announced that he would move to Sirius, XM had a 3-4 million lead in subscribers over Sirius.

The story goes that Stern wanted to move to XM and told the bosses at XM that he could bring Sirius down if he moved to XM. The bosses replied that it would happen anyway. How could they be so confident?

From what I remember, back in 2004 the only exclusive content that XM could offer was Opie and Anthony and Major league baseball. Supposedly only a few thousand subscribers paid for the premium O&A channel. And most baseball fans get free coverage of their local team anyway.

That's an easy one...it was called $9.95 per month compared to Sirius at $12.95. The price point was easier to sell.

IMO the XM approach to music also had a lot to do with it.
And, the XM OEM deals have always been stronger than SIRI's.
