Exploding a few myths

Hello, friends.

I just did something I figured I would never do...replied to a post containing a lie about me. As I state in that post, subject line "Limbaugh," I don't really care what contemptible things are said about me by people who don't know what they're talking about. But when they contain things that reflect on others, it's another matter.

That said, I have to say it was energizing to throw a few words into this pond. It is filled with proud professionals at times, and other times with bitter malcontents. The small price of free speech.

But since I'm sitting here and have a couple of extra minutes, I figured I'd explode a few of the most repeated myths I see. I'm a fairly rare visitor, so fresh BS may go unaddressed for months.

But for now, here we go:

MY SYNDICATION HISTORY: Since ABC gave me the national show in September 2005, many references have been made to my previous national broadcast history. I have never had a daily syndicated show before. (You will see the occasional dunderheaded reference to some show I had "which lasted eight months.") My Sunday show lasted from 1997 to 2003 without interruption. Two things happened in '03-- my son was born, which eroded my desire to keep working six days, and the weekend topical talk ad market dried up, which eroded ABC's desire to pay what I wanted for '04 and beyond. The Sunday show was fun, but was never a big deal. It kept the needles bouncing in 100 to 150 markets, most of them small but grateful. The congeniality that marked the end of the Sunday show was part of the goodwill that led to the network giving me the weekday gig.

WBAP IN GENERAL: Everyone is entitled to an opinion about any show in the universe. You can think I suck, and that's fine. But there is nothing funnier than the cult of bitterness that clasps its hands waiting for my extinction, or Rush's or Sean's or whatever. The nine hours of Me/Rush/Sean are a powerhouse of talk, and when you precede it with a legend like Hal Jay and follow it with Levin/Gold/Doyle til midnight, that's why we are untouchable. No domination lasts forever, but you tell me what beats it. Plenty have tried.

MY BUDDY RUSS MARTIN: I scarcely recall how this got started, but the status quo is this: His is a show that doesn't care about discussing, or welcoming, personalities from elsewhere in the Metroplex media. No doubt it is an oddity for an afternoon drive radio icon to solicit guest hits from a midday counterpart in the same market. But it is pure symbiosis. He gets what he graciously considers decent radio, and I get some exposure to people who might not otherwise know I exist. He's happy, I'm happy. No mystery.

THE CITADEL MERGER: No one knows what exact effect it will have until it happens, but every vibe from every executive I've spoken with is that they didn't plunk down all that cash to screw ABC up. I have loved being a Disney employee for a decade, but the fact is that against the backdrop of their vast empire, we are but a small sliver. Citadel is an actual Radio Company, and that may accrue to the benefit of many.

A Happy Spring to all.

Mark

Re: Exploding a few SELECT myths

Ummm...what brought this on? I don't recall him being discussed on this board in quite a while. Must have Googled himself and found some dusty posts. I must have missed the part where he blew up the myth of dumping the handicapped ex-wife. I'll read his post again.

I've listened, I don't like the show, the subject matter is uneven and usually uninteresting to me, and it's politically charged in a bash-anyone-who-doesn't-think-like-I-do way. Mark, like other WBAP hosts, is nothing more than a shill for every foundation repair company in town. I look at his show in the same light as "The Alpha Mortgage Hour" or anyone else who pays for time to hawk his own interests. Sure, you might glean something useful through the sales pitch, if you're lucky. Of course, the rest of the sales pitch is for the Republican Party. The 70% of Americans that don't trust nor like Bush, he calls "stupid." And, as if his show isn't platform enough, he sends "Letters to the Editor" to the local papers regularly, which each publishes under the guise of a "column." Of course, these are nothing more than shameless plugs for his show, and more grandstanding for his personal opinions and his attempt to change weak minds over to the conservative way of thinking. I pity those who can't think for themselves.

The other stuff? Who really cares. Personally, I think Russ and Mark deserve each other. What a great matchup of glass-house egos. And what beats that powerhouse lineup? XM, Sirius, CDs, iPods, the toy monkey that claps cymbals together, screaming children, 8-tracks, dead air, etc. Or did he mean by ratings? The bar is set so low these days. Funny, if a station achieves a very respectable 5.0 (by today's standards,) the flipside to that is that NINETY-FIVE percent of listeners out there are listening to something else.

Want a positive spin so I don't sound like one of those embittered people he references? He has a loyal fan base, he's on an otherwise good station with lots of heritage, and he has plenty of name recognition in this market. Like with Russ, there are obvious facts that can't be denied. However, those things don't require me to buy into his schlock myself. I still control the OFF button. Could I do it better? Am I jealous? No, not really. I'd certainly pick different subjects, but I'd be no better than Davis, interjecting my own opinion. Again, the OFF button is very handy for those things.

WBAP: News, Stars, Hal. That's about the total of my need for WBAP.

I can't imagine having to deal with something like that. I certainly can't guarantee how I'd behave if something happened to my wife or one of my kids. I'd like to think I'd stand by them and stay with them, but nobody really knows how you'll react until something tragic happens.

What got me really about Marks comments aren't the "rumored" moves in his personal and professional life, its this comment:

Wow, sounds a little big for his britches I would say. Yes, many people in this market do dislike your show sir. Personally, I have no problem with you expressing your freedom of speech and turning a dime in the process, but realize that there are other "malcontent" voices who havent been granted in your words, the "Free Market Podium" to express those thoughts. One reason ive tuned out of WBAP is the fact after 9am, its become the "We Love Bush Even If He Drops The Atomic Bomb" station. I havent heard any dissenting voices or honest candor concerning this administration, just the same (BLEEP) and bull excuses and resentment towards anyone who can put together more cognative thought or concepts on the table. The way I see it, its like the same folks who watch Jerry Springer: Barely passed highschool, drives a truck, and believes everything the government tells them.

It ain't braggin' if you can back it up. ;-)

They likely don't have the airtime because nobody's listening. The liberal talk shows aren't doing as well in the ratings:

Air America Falls Off The Charts

Not Surprised At Low Air America Ratings

WUSY Country At Top Of Charts, Air America Off The Charts

...and on and on and on. :)

I don't listen to Mark often, as I am working and have no access to a radio, but I think that Mark and know that many conservatives are not with the President on many issues, such as immigration. What you are implying, that President Bush gets support without regard for what the issue is and without thought, is, frankly, absurd, not to mention insulting.

I think that healthy disagreement is good, but during war we do not need to let the terrorists know our misgivings. It only gives them power and makes us look weaker.

I hear plenty of dissenting opinions on Mark's show and other shows, but they are usually torn down quickly and easily, as they don't typically offer any solutions, only more hatred, personal insults, and unproven innuendo. I'm sure this is why many liberals don't even try to call in any more--it's just embarassing.

If you don't like it, you are doing what you can by turning the dial or turing it off, but Mr. Bush is still the president, until 2008 when you guys vote Hillary in.

Is there anything to suggest this is the REAL Mark Davis? Could it be an imposter?

Good point. Read my initial post. It reads like I talk, and pardon the way this sounds, but the average phony isn't all that literate.

And the average fake wouldn't be a spelling dork like I am and offer that the preferred spelling is "impostor."

Good for you for the question. Skepticism is a virtue.

No Doubt it is Mark. I like Mark personally. He stands by his co-workers no matter their status, and I have seen him with his daughter on a few occassions. He is a good father. His politics I can do without and his show I turned off years ago,due to its uneveness in time allotted for opposing views.
He is a success, and panders to the DFW conservative atmoshpere, which by the way is showing a few cracks based on a few election results. Limbaugh, and "buy my latest book"Hannity are a different story. They are more into themselves than ever appearing to be credible.

KPLEXCOMPLEX:

You like Mark personally? Really? I think someone should take time to read your hundreds and hundreds of post on here and count how many times you slammed Mark. Especially your drivel about how he treated his wife. Look at Edward R Murrows post too :)

You know I have to have a mea culpa of my own. I've joined the hit parade against certain folks in here as well, Mark being one of them. I'll have you know I'm medicated now.

Lately I've come to respect folks like Mark, Jody, Catfish, and Ben who will come in here and post as themselves instead of throwing daggers from behind the cloak of anonymity. Granted Mark and Jody have much more clout than yours truly but it takes a lot of moxie to come in here with the mask off.

I won't be joining their noble cause just yet, but I also won't launch a groundless attack against someone in the market, either.

Dude: Catbox. You never seem to learn. ad nauseaum. MANY were lambasting Mark for his dealings with his ex-wife at the time. Stick to the facts, not your personal fables. BTW I thought you were through with me?

I AM sticking to the FACTS. Go back and read your posts at the time. I counted 4 people slamming him. KPLEXCOMPLEX, EDWARD R MURROW, and two others. No nody else felt the need to kick him further.

Thanks for the compliment! I'm truly a nobody on the DFW radio scene, but I enjoy the small role I do play and I know what I type here reflects on me, so you probably won't see me posting anything too crazy. There is a great amount of negativity here and it was rapidly explained to me when I first joined that this comes with the territory. I will slip up from time to time, but I make conscious choices not to take part in it as it serves no purpose other than to show how juvenile you can be. The simple rule of thumb is... don't say anything here that you wouldn't say to someone's face.

Regarding Mark, I have worked around him, never directly with him, but he was always cordial and respectful to me. (Often I've been looked through, treated as though I didn't exist or was invisible, because I am so far below the other radio personalities on the food chain.)

My wife is a nurse and took care of his wife in the hospital a few years back, and she has nothing but good things to say about him personally. She didn't even realize who he was until days later, so he certainly didn't brag about himself or expect special treatment.<P ID="signature">______________

DUDE: CATBOX If you are,it definitely would be a first for you. Cut and paste and ADDED embellishments do not qualify. Hey what happened to "working on your negative behavior"? Another short lived segment of yours?Must be the heatwave. Try to seek some shade and some ice tea.

The only negatives i talk about is YOUR constant negative drivel on here. Which is quite evident. Read archives. However, judging by your last few post on here i see you haven't attacked anybody. That's good Mr.KPLEXCOMPLEX. My charming personality and calling you out (and others) on your drivel seems to be working :)

I think you're finally understanding the difference in constructive critisism and just plain NEGATIVE DRIVEL. WE'll see...

Currently consuming large amounts of LIPTON ORIGINAL ICED TEA IN A BOTTLE. MADE WITH FRESH BREWED TEA LEAVES. Get ya some. I highly recommend it.

DUDE CATBOX : You are accusing me what you have been constantly doing ever since the internet was made available. Congratulations you now have developed some humor, now if you would only get off your high horse and self appointed sheriff fantasy, you might possibly make it in reality.Charming personality? LOL. You must be inhaling the tea,not drinking it.As far as lessons to be learned, you really should have stayed in school. You are far from graduation, when it comes to tolerance, plus opinions of others in direct opposition to your own. Now go back to working on your negative personality, and remove the fantasy that you have never attacked anyone besides myself on this or any post. Good people like Sandee,Judge( "sellin magazines in Arlington".)>,plus Chuck. You know what they say about "Glass houses". Try working the 12 steps. You can do it,we're behind ya.

Oh there you go again, Teflon man. Always trying to blame others for your own drivel you spew on here. If i found out you stole a snicker at 7-11 and revealed it here on this board, you would claim that i too stole a snicker from 7-11.

Chill out and try and help yourself. Go fetch your Indian Chief Writing Tablet and write 1000 times:
