Exporting KTCK?

Cumulus has flipped their moden rock KTLT 98.1 "98X" Abilene to sports "ESPN 98 the Ticket" this morning according to the Abilene paper -- http://www.reporternews.com/news/2010/sep/10/ktlt-becomes-espn-radio/.

It seems to infer Cumulus may be thinking about simulcasting some of the KTCK shows on it --

"Some Dallas area talk shows may also be part of the package, according to Jim Christoferson, market manager for Cumulus stations in Abilene and Midland-Odessa. “They’ve got local hosts who are very well branded,” he said. “Most of the people in Abilene will be interested in the teams in Dallas.”"

It's the first step to Hardline syndication ... which may be OK regionally but would go over like a lead balloon nationally. The Hardline can only work in Dallas.

The Musers and Norm will work in Abilene.

They work for me, I live in Tennessee, never lived in Texas,

I have actually thought for some time that syndicating The Ticket's programming to the smaller markets surrounding the Metroplex would make a lot of sense. I would not be surprised if similar moves followed in Wichita Falls and Killeen-Temple (which has no sports station).

Russ Martin in Austin was a totally different animal. Austin is a finicky, medium-sized market with a very distinct identity and culture. Abilene, Wichita Falls, Texarkana, Tyler-Longview, Waco and Killeen-Temple are small markets that do not. By and large, these are feeder markets that live and breath the Dallas sports teams. Also, they do not have a distracting, national-powerhouse collegiate team, like the Longhorns, in town to siphon away all of the attention.

Since the majority of north and west Texas cheer for Dallas teams and look at the Metroplex as their big city of choice, I suspect this plan will be a big, big winner.

The only possible hiccup could be Gordo. He won't play well in small town Texas.

Danny, on the other hand, will be a hit.

Having grown up small town West Texas and still spending a lot of time there.........D/FW is the center of the known local broadcasting and sports universe. Places like Wichita, Abilene, Midland-Odessa, Amarillo, Lubbock, even El Paso and San Angelo, look to Dallas/Ft. Worth for coverage. It's a bit of a bona-fide to get included in and with the market.

Houston? Houston is a far-away place on the border of the Louisiana swamps that nobody ever goes to or knows much about. A bunch of people live there but nobody knows anyone who does. On the other hand, everyone knows somebody......friends, family...who are in DFW.

Astros? Might as well be Martians. Texans? Still a Triple-A team. Spurs? There are 15 big-time supporters. In short, south of Dallas/Fort Worth.................NOBODY CARES.

And that's the way it should be.

It looks like over the weekend, Cumulus has also flipped classic rock KLTD 101.7 Temple to "101.7 the Ticket." I wonder if KTCK "may also be part of the package" for that station as well.

Even though it's a long way away..the KFAN radio network in the twin cities has a bunch of affiliates that simulcast some of KFAN 1130 in Minneapolis. I am kind of surprised the ticket (even though the way this is works I guess) doesn't have a simulcast of all the shows on 101.7, 98.1 and the smaller markets around Texas.
