I didn't interview the founder, Will Walmsley, but I don't need to. My only point was to counter your statement that some train has left the station with regards to garage startups. The same mechanism that worked for Walmsley is available to anyone with an idea and knowledge about computer code. It's easier now than it was for Gates and Jobs. Gates and Jobs didn't just start companies, they first had to create the industry of microcomputers for the masses. There is remarkably little friction in starting a tech company right now.

I agree, the catch in making that company a success. No level playing field really, even still, whether that playing field was transmitters and towers, or the internet. The challenge is still to come up with an idea that's so great that everyone wants it, and every minute, that becomes harder and harder. There was a great 60 Minutes piece this past weekend with a co-creator of Twitter, who is now running a company called Square.com. It's one thing to come up with a great idea. Even better when the entire world loves it. Then the third process is to monetize it, and that gets harder and harder when consumers assume everything is for free.
