Extremely strong Jersey Shore Tropo

nd2023

Banned
Today, there was great tropo all day in Belmar. I got every station from Long Island, including the translators and a pirate station.
I could not believe how strong it was, even in the middle of the afternoon. The 10 watt translator on 96.5 80 miles away was coming in stronger than WQXR. That translator over in Long Island is gone 4 miles from its transmitter site. And I managed to pick up a flea powered pirate station 70 miles away. The NYC stations were weaker than the Long Island stations.
The tropo seemed to be very strong within a wavelength (10 feet) of the ocean and weakened as I moved towards the boardwalk. But I was able to hear the full power stations well inland. After dark, Providence, Cape Cod, and Boston started to come in.
A sign of my radio geekiness was that I knew the call letters of every full power station I logged today. Besides the fact that I was tuning up and down the dial instead of relaxing on the beach. And I also called Party 105 and DXed my own voice.

I'm sorry to sound like an idiot could someone explain what tropo is and how it allows these frequencies to bleed into South Jersey?

Great catches! During an e-skip last week, I received WXLM and a few other Long Island stations strong in midday! Here in North Jersey, WBLI usually bleeds onto WHTG often during the day and WMJC usually takes over WJLK often during the day also.

It was not e-skip, it was tropo.

FM radio signals do not curve with the Earth, and normally shoot off into space after 50 miles or so. During the summer, the positively charged ions in the air from thunderstorms and similar weather patterns will instead trap the signal in the atmosphere, where it can "skip" along for hundreds or thousands of miles.

That explanation is wrong.

Tropo is caused by a temperature inversion. The air above the surface is usually cooler than the air on the surface. But during a temperature inversion, the air above is warmer. The warm air layer refracts radio signals back to the ground instead of out to space. Temperature inversions can happen anytime, but usually happen the day before a cold front.

E-skip is caused when parts of the ionosphere get excessively ionized. Could be caused by solar radiation. But the exact causes are unknown. Thunderstorms don't cause e-skip. Radio waves heading off to space are instead reflected by the cloud of ions and the waves bounce down 1000 miles away.

Today I can pull Party 105, BLI, and Jamn 107.7 from Spring Lake to Bay Head. Pulse 87 however got a better sound on 87.9 for some reason.

Correction: Add WZXL, Beach 101.7, WBAB, and believe it or not K104 to the tropo coverage today.
