Facebook frauds?

Re: Facebook frauds?

Just yesterday, somebody claiming to be from the WWE had posted an update on the "personal profile" of Linda McMahon's daughter Stephanie, advising the 2,600 or so friends that the account was a fraud, and to "like" Stephanie's "official fan page".

Re: Facebook frauds?

Someone has a page claiming to be "Todd Storz". Yes, the legendary programmer who passed away decades ago. Anyone can start an account.

Re: Facebook frauds?

Sometimes people start Facebook "fan" pages for public figures or celebrities without necessarily claiming to BE that person, but also, not bothering to post any disclaimer indicating that they're actually not that person. They name the page for the celebrity and post their picture as the profile, so it looks as if it's the celebrities own personal page.

Then, when the page creator posts stuff, the name it appears to be posted by is the title of the page which is the name of the celebrity that the page is a tribute to, then people ALWAYS think that it's the celebrity him/herself posting (thinking that the actual celebrity is reading their replies, etc...), and the creator usually says nothing to the contrary.

another annoying thing FB does is create a generic "page" for anything anyone puts in their "interests" field. It then fills in info from wikipedia...

I noticed that months ago. It appears that Facebook actually utilized Wikipedia for certain terms and other things to appear on users' profiles.

Re: Facebook frauds?

At one point there were 3 Facebook pages dedicated to helping me get out of my non-compete/finding a new gig.

I am appreciative of the effort, but made it a point to post on all of them, and make it very clear that none of those pages were actually me.

Identity fraud is rampant everywhere. Especially for those who work in public industries.
