Facebook "Likes" for a charitable contribution

KPHO (CBS5) has teamed up with Crisis Nursery for a fundraiser. The station has asked viewers to "like" them on Facebook and KPHO will donate $1 per like up to $5000 to Crisis Nursery.

Some are raising issues with KPHO about this since there is no counter of "likes" received since the start of this campaign. How do we know how many new likes were received based on people wanting to help with this fundraiser?

What the station should have done was to create a new Facebook page for the KPHO/Crisis Nursery fundraiser and used the "Like" count from that page for their contribution.

We all know how stations love to push marketing hype about themselves ("first on the scene", "only [time] newscast", #1 Station at [time]", etc.) and Facebook likes is just another thing they can push.
