facebook & radio

Don't know how many of you are on fb but there is a group you might want to search out. It's called "You know you work(ed) in radio when...". Just a warning to edit your settings if you join since if you ask for an email for every post you will have hundreds in your mailbox by morning. It's non-stop. Someone just posted a WKBW link so I thought I would pass this on.

It's a closed group, you have to apply for an invitation, but if I do I'll remember to change my settings.

Sometime I'd love to have a better understanding of why nearly every radio station, TV station, newspaper and magazine in the nation gives free advertising to Facebook. If it weren't for the billions of bucks worth of free publicity, Facebook would be a big nothing.

So, this is an international group? No matter whether you're in Canada, USA, or...anywhere else in the (English language) world?

Yez, don't know, don't care. They are about the most insecure site anywhere. I am waiting to hear there is some sort of a newfangled form of payola going on there. But hey, that's just me.

Sounds like Tom Bauerle loves using Facebook to interact with his listeners.

Yes, I have noticed a couple Brits on it.

think its wild - how now
(even if the talent themselves
doesnt read it) anyone (w/ a few
exceptions) can post anything
on any talent's forum (wall,message,etc)...
-
here in buffalo, IM sure u can get thru and call in,
but the national shows, you may not, and *BEFORE*
you (could) write a letter on an issue(if u did so) was almost
pointless by the time the sports-talent gets the mail,
its already the next game/week,etc

but now, even BIG names (national) talents,
on national networks, simply add/friend them,
and then post away...it maybe makes the
top dogs a little more accessible and less
inclusive but at the same time, connects
more of the audience.

Broadcasters ignore Facebook at their own peril. When it comes to interacting with listeners, it's like the old Request Line on steroids because you get ALL the calls, and everyone gets in on the conversation.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

The interaction with listeners provides opportunity to turn them into fans of the station. Plus they perceive the jocks actually give a hoot, even if it's just to thank a poster for a request. Same applies to texting and email.

And if all the jocks participate in compelling posts that garner listener response, it's not only great supplemental show prep, it's a superb way to cross-promote without sounding like you're reading a liner.

I agree 100%. If you are in radio and you ignore social media, you do so at your own peril. BTW-I find that Facebook group to be a lot of fun, although exhausting if you try to read each and every post (except mine, of course ;D). It's kind of like one thread on this board taken to an extreme.

Except that that one thread will eventually break a record for the longest little storybook going.
