Failure Redux

Turned on 1480 this morning to the sweet banter of Stephanie Miller.

The Nearly Bald One could learn a thing or two about using sfx from her...and of course, she could learn something from him about ratings. Nurse Jeff and I wish Ed Shultz was doing PMD instead of Mike Nuke'em....of course anyone following Randi X#@!&* Rhodes will have a tough time bringing the station back from the brink!

Now where do we go for a Two Martini lunch seeing that the Lounge Lizard has departed?

I've been quoted by Dr. Akbar! What an honor!

14~Eighty is once more a great station. (Or do you call it KPeeAgeHex ?)

He could learn a thing or two about using SFX from nearly anyone. ;D

Have't you two guys found the birch beer place yet?

Otherwise, how about Durant's? It's also in the St. Joe's neighborhood. I'm sure
the 90 Dwarfs piled into there about 11:30 today for a pick-me-up prior to their
trundling over to 1700 West to do biz with the Guv. Heck, maybe she joined 'em.
Call it "a brewski with the Brewer." (But we better not see Durant's receipts on
any of your per diems! ::))

For us it'll always be La Super X...Kah Pay Ach-ay Eck-ees, Catorce Ochenta Ah M-may. But Oldiesfan probably remembers it best as KHAT...slighty before our time!

Nurse Jeff and I hope the fourth time around for the format is the charm...and they keep it on 14~Eighty instead of window shopping another LMA.

If KPHX can only find the right brand of colon blow for the weekend infomercial, they can blow out the competition! Of course, Enzyte might want to buy time and help jack-up the ratings and engorge revenue for KPHX. ;D

Classic example of a station that should go dark. along with about 2/3 of the rest of the AMs. then put liberal talk on 620 (like it is in portland) and see what happens.

don't be dense. there is a much larger audience for progressive talk than there is for the bruce jacobs-hugh hewitt-lars larsen-curtis sliwa-sean insanity pukers of the world.
This is just too easy!

FACT: If you look at ANY demo, ANY book, ANY trend you like over ANY one of the many failed instances of "progressive talk" in this market, you will notice that it never even makes so much as a dent--by that I mean garnering even >2.0 share. The 12+ numbers and 25-54A were just pitiful for KPHX/KNUV/et al. Good formats can rise above a bad stick. Howard Stern was on a weak signaled edge (and KHOT for a few months previous) yet still was #1 in the market.

Why do so many of the "progressive stations" across the country go dark? Because the format is a massive failure in MOST markets. You used the example of Portland... Liberal talk does better there SLIGHTLY because it's PORTLAND, where a higher percentage of the population is "progressive", even though that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with listener numbers.

To further debunk your Portland theory: KPOJ, the "progressive talker" in the Portland area has a stellar 2.1 12+ in the Win09 book... VERY IMPRESSIVE, if that's the best Nova M/Air America/whatever can do, then it portends poorly for Phoenix.

In general: "progressive talk" will always fail in Phoenix; specifically: It's usually run by either 1) misfits/thieves, 2) people that have no idea how to run radio stations, 3) people who don't/won't hire talent that could even have the potential to garner an audience.

It had one down book out of a dozen where it nearly equalled perennial AM leader KEX. That's an error of omission on your part to cherry pick just the most recent book when KPOJ has a history of huge success in Portland.

A 1 share 6+ at best. What'll make it work is if Kah Pay Ach-ee Eck-ees becomes a social network where listeners, advertisers, decision makers, share common interests and goals. If you listen closely, a number of their local advertisers are just as gah-gah, goo-goo about being Progressives. K-FuNN has been able to do quite well without ratings as their advertisers know 15~Ten listeners support them in a manner currently not measured by ratings. Done right, the Nurse and I think it could happen at La Super Eck-ees!

KFNN actually has advertisers bigger than a non-chain bookstore, a couple of real estate agents and a coffee house or two. The facts are simple, it has failed in each of it's previous incarnations and it will do so once again. As I mentioned previously, the same people (in general) keep running these type of stations.

If you honestly think that a station with Mike Newcomb in PMD is the formula for success then maybe you should throw away some money and become an investor, granted you could just paypal me that money and save yourself the trouble, at least I wouldn't spend it foolishly on an impossible dream.

Well, I just pulled up the most recent book... it seems that they have actually gotten higher than a 2.1... they actually went over a 3, which is remarkable... regardless, Portland is not Phoenix and such a station will never work. I'd make a wager with anyone to that end and gladly take your money.
