Falcons/Jaguars pre-season football coverage

With the Olympics on channel 11 the Falcons first pre-season game was on channel 36 Saturday night. The video was bad and hard to watch in 2008. I guess the thought of doing the game in HD did not cross their mind. The highlights shown on the channel 2 11pm news had ghosts in the video. It was better on Dave FM and you did not have to look at the bad video.

I thought the video was terrible also. It seemed they never could focus or get good close to the players without it being distorted.

Last year when WXIA aired the games...they were in standard definition...each game followed by the news in high definition.

It sounds like WXIA/WATL has to rent the equipment...and HD is out of the budget (especially after the studio move). The weekly Falcons shows (live or otherwise) are produced in HD using the news equipment. It sounds like if they can use the news board, they can go HD (and for a football game with dozens of cameras that has to be switched at the stadium - they have to decide on the worth of doing it in HD).

WPCH was not initally going to go HD for Braves games...until fans complained. Now, all WPCH games are in HD.

Comparing WXIA and the Falcons with PCH and the Braves is a different animal.

With WXIA, you're talking about a station renting HD equipment or hiring an HD truck to produce four games of preseason football. Less than a third of the NFL teams are doing preseason games in HD.

There was never any question that Peachtree TV was going to do the Braves games in HD. Don't know where you heard otherwise, but it was always going to happen for the home games. Turner already owned the equipment and had permanantly wired Turner field for HD when it was still under TBS. In addition, Fox had already announced that all of the FSN and SportSouth home games would be in HD. The only question was would cable and satellite providers pick up the HD feed. Comcast and Charter came thru big all over the southeast, putting the Peachtree games in HD in each of their markets.
