Fall 07 Arbs

no wonder why WQIK seemed off.....go Gator Country....Jeff Davis knows what he is doing there and its shooting WQIK in the foot......its now werid to think that there are now only two country stations in Jax and both are on the 99 dial and both are owned by different companies...so nice to have competition now.

You and Gator have come a long way since the days of cardboard over the sign. I do miss Oldiescat and I firing you up
back when Renda was so unorganized...M. Keep the energy going...the world needs a few million more good folks like you.

Don't for a second think that CC is done in Jacksonville. Judging by what the numbers look like for the fall book, the diaries got sent to the west and northsides per the urban stations doing well. All the main stream rock stations took a dive ..ie 96.1. How does a station like Lite climb the ladder then fall off so quickly? Historically diaries don't get returned during the holidays. My prediction for the winter and spring books is Lite will be back, QIK and Gator will show QIK in the top 2 and Gator back down to #7 or lower. Renda will always throw money at Lite and just hope Gator will beat QIK. With the exception of WOKV Cox is screwed. They either have to start selling off their music stations now or start letting people go at News Talk Radio. Bubba is just a finger in the dike. He's just Cox's way of saving a salary. Wasn't Bubba working for Howard Stern on Sirius. Guess Stern got sick of this guy quick enough. Maybe if the Cox music outlets in Jacksonville can hang in long enough Bob Neill will get canned, the People Meters will get here and Cox will come alive again.

After reading the fall book up and down yes, weird things did happen. I agree with mhs though, the programming knows what they are doing over at gator. Mornings are right right behind wqik in women. Middays are like #2, Afternoons are #4, and weekends are #2. Voice Tracking Vs. Live radio. Isnt gator live pretty much across the board?

I think Gator is pretty much live now....the only question is nights with Craiger....its seems to me its VT and if it is they pull it off pretty well to make it seem live. I also notice something last Thursday at the George Strait concert (yeah I know he will be back to make up the show he missed) at the Veterans Memorial Arena is that Gator was allow to put the station van in front of the Arena as well...WQIK only had there truck and it was a cross the street...so who got more attention....GATOR COUNTRY....it will pay off with the ratings for sure. BTW...is Tom Murphy now Renda Jax's Traffic guy as in he only deals with those four stations? I know Cox has their own traffic gal and Clear Channel sends reports from O-town to here....weird.

Re: Fall 07 Arbs 99.9 GATOR/WQIK

For the past 5 ratings period WQIK has been trending down, while Gator Country has been trending up! Good programming and their new morning show really set the station on fire; the former WAPE team is well know in Jacksonville and has over 11 years of history. It just shows what good talent can do to ratings and the bottom line. I'm sure WQIK is aware of their situation and cannot be happy with the trends or the fall 07 book. Rooster finally died and Gator is now knocking rather loudly on the front door of WQIK looking for lunch.

Go Gators

Just some clarification on the Bubba comments....He is still on Howard Sterns Channel on sirus so he is doing 2 shous a day now...apparently from hearing the interview with him and Stern the contract wasnt very good but Bubba felt some loyality to Stern for putting him back on the air....I hope with the newer music and Bubba ROCK 105 will come alive again...they are paying him WAAAAY to much money to just be a 'finger in the dike'...the other outlets in the building are doing ok...dont know what will happen with POINT....but something needs to be done.....
Good for Gator movin in here and putting on a product people want to listen too,....competition is a good thing

Alligators BITE!

Jeff Davis and 99.9 will do just fine in their new home. I worked with Jeff 12 years ago in Ocala when he was just starting out. He knows what to do. Learned a lot from Bill Kramer.

About damn time someone makes a serious run at 'QIK. (WROO did years ago with Buzz & Co., but that's been awhile.)

Jeff will do good so long as Renda gives him the Budget to pull it off. When the station was still in Daytona they were automated half the time (or so it seemed).

Weighing in on this topic a little later than normal, but part of my hesitation to post is that I think regardless of what the numbers say, decisions continue to be made that just make me scratch my head. The talent continues to be the fall guy despite even good numbers. It has to remain tough to work in a business where good results have little reward and certainly it doesn't mean you keep your job.

I was surprised WEJZ didn't perform better. And I don't buy people not returning diaries during the holidays. That's not the fact for all the stations across the country that scored big numbers with Christmas music. Something is happening, perhaps a fluke but let's see what the next trend says. One thing I can say is I wasn't the least excited about WEJZ's Christmas programming last year. Something was off and I think it had to do more with playing less traditional favorites than in the past. But what do I know? No one seems to want to listen to John Q. Public if you pardon the name expression. Youth obsession rules.

93.3 did a better programming job but hardly anyone gave them a listen. I suppose there wasn't enough time. Few obviously had 93.3 programmed on their car radios and they weren't going to go through the trouble to do that.

I do agree about the bright spot with Gator. A few months ago, I was in a health food store and saw the station being promoted. My first reaction was that they were taking a different approach and not going with stereotype. It was actually refreshing to see the audience treated with some degree of respect. I can't say the same for the marketing decision that was made at WQIK. What a horrific ad campaign showcasing "The Big Show" as a bunch of half-wits. Not good. Like it or not, Jax is changing. The folks at Gator seem to recognize that. Their success has been earned. A great morning show doesn't hurt either.

There are fewer radio stations distinguishing themselves as being something different and unique. As excited as I was about the music heard on WSOS last year, they too have succumbed to the desire to sound like everyone else. Way too many 80s songs. I'm finding I'm listening less and less. And even though expectations are not great for a low power station such as they are, they seem to be trending down. People will not take the time to listen if there isn't anything different and worth listening to.

It will be interesting to see if Jazz holds on and even trends a little further up. Perhaps, people are searching for something different after all.

But all in all, I guess most stations in general would rather make some type of showing in younger demos even if it means total audience drops. It's a heck of way to do business and large segments of the audience remain disenfranchised.

The first part of my post had to do with talent being the fall guy. I was really distressed to hear Pat Garrett is gone once again from another radio station. Like so many others in his shoes, it matters little how great a job you do or how talented you are. This is not a good way to do business.

Good luck Pat.
