FALL '07 PHASE ONE TRENDS

  • Thread starter SeattleRadioPro
  • Start date

Not quoting 25-54, in order to stay within arbitron boundaries it was a very good trend for KRWM, KZOK, KUBE, KISW, KCMS, KMPS and KWJZ. KRWM drops some from Nov/Dec but holds on to much of the cume gained during Christmas. Begs the question: why don't more stations play Christmas music like KBSG, KPLZ, KWJZ? The impact lasts for three to four months each year.

This trend will do nothing to change the format flip discussion surrounding KBSG which has been on a downward slide since Spring. The same can be said of KBKS, which remains far behind KUBE, KISW and KQMV in significant demos and is back out of the top 5 18-34 for January. KNDD remains way behind KZOK and KISW, but had a solid January which will probably end any talk of format flips. KQMV popped back a bit, which should mean they will stay at it for another year. KPLZ seems to slumber in late Fall and Winter, only to reawaken in Spring each year. Seems KPLZ and KRWM just alternate seasons. KMPS is now soundly ahead of KWFF in every demo for the fifth or sixth month in a row, yet KWFF is a solid second buy in Country and top ten in 25-54 demos.

On the AM side the big question will be the election. Can the excitement over the election create an audience for KIRO, KOMO, KVI, KTTH? Will any of these stations go to an FM simulcast? January looked weak for all, but Fall might be a turnaround time. Other than that, no real surprises.

In short: nothing changes much in Seattle. This Winter is shaping up to look like any other.

Dan,

Did the Mountain rebound in this last trend? Also it appears to me, unless I'm missing something, that while KISW owns the younger rock demo, that KZOK & JACK just share the same older audience. When JACK has a good book, KZOK slips a little. When the crew over at KZOK kick it into high gear to get those listeners back, JACK plummets as shown in this latest trend. How does cbs benefit from this?

KIRO tops KOMO (not that anyone cares about AM radio anyway).

- such as yourself - which has nothing else better to do online anyway -

Whatever, dialtwisty. Your retorts are becoming as boring as your posts.

Mamma will let the numbers speak for themselves. MOVIN 25-54 beats KISS again beats JACK and over the last two trends beats STAR. KUBE still grows but MOVIN is strong and even over the last four books MOVIN beat KKISS in just about any demo cept Teens. Won't say any more cause the testosterone on this board gets angry every time I post. Just look at the numbers. MOVIN is not a national format it is a Seattle radio station and the MOVIN here sounds much different that LA or SF. Props to Monti and brooke and others that take punches on this board. Let the numbers talk. Mamma has stopped posting on a regular base, but mamma is watching.

MOVIN doesn't need mamma to cheer them on, the numbers are enough cheer in the Sandusky building.

To answer the comments above:

KMTT is middle of the pack 25-54, but top ten and they bill well. They get the on and off spike trend which helps them from time to time.

I had not noticed the JACK/KZOK relationship, but you are correct. When JACK does very well it hurts KZOK. When KZOK does well it hurts JACK. Both are 70% male driven and 25-54 based, so it makes sense. Similar situation with KISW and KNDD with younger men. When Adam Carolla got his one or two spike trends last year, it killed KISW mornings. It didn't last at KISW is back on top with young men for the last six or seven trends.

Mamma is also somewhat right. KQMV is settling in as the number two contemporary hit station well behind KUBE. However, they are beating KBKS on a four book and have beaten JACK and KPLZ in the last two trends. However, as discussed above ,I think KZOK has more to do with JACK's poor trends while KPLZ gets beaten by KRWM every Dec/Jan/Feb thanks to their Christmas music cume hanging around. I don't think MOVIN has much to do with the success or failure of JACK or KPLZ. They do impact KBKS, without question. So Mamma is actually a little bit right. (Did I just say that?)

As for the AM stations, it is a solid battle between KIRO and KOMO. In the demos they care about (35-64 and 44-64) they do quite well and I can tell you from the sales side they are both extremely strong. KIRO may be the top biller in the market this year or just a tad behind KMPS. KOMO is top five. not including Mariners revenue. AM is hardly dead, it is just an older demographic sell.

DJ Dan,
Do you think the changes at The Mountain musically are sustanable? Less classic rock, more lean toward female pop. It seems that the station was built and had most sucess when it was 'blues-rock' focused? See any growth in women? Billing is good, but for how long?

So when are you all gonna act like men and admit you're wrong and suck up to mamma? Doesn't mamma ALWAYS know best? ;D

Don't get your panties in a wad, Mamma...er, Monti...wait...huh?

Congrats to MOVIN', but this brings up an interesting question....is it Brooke and Monti? Don't forget...half of the fall book is still the old morning show. Mamma may be watching, but we're all watching her post mind-numbing garbage on this board. Long live the testosterone.

Major no offense, but why do you even waste your time posting on this board? You offer no opinions whatsoever, instead all you seem to post are links most could care less about and the ocassional comment that really has nothing to do with the actual topic of discussion. You'd get alot more respect from the rest of the people on these boards if you ocassionally had something intelligent to say.

Major Radio puts some good stuff up here once in a while. No need to pick on him.

Whats happened to all the Seattle radio drama? Would the last
live Jock on the air please turn off the lights when you're done!

Major: why do you even waste your time posting on this board?...

Capt Puget had taught me well...

..it's for...the.. HALIBUT!
:)

Seriously - and to clear any/all misconceptions:

You've GOT to accept the fact that the web can be FULL of online 'stalkers'....I am certainly not one of them,
but alas, I've been a target victim of it here - and I laugh at all that continue to try to expose me...

I'm certainly not 'dialtwisty' as others have claimed...from those that believe they will get some kindof
brownie points for wasting their energies on this....I already proved who this dork was anyway.....his privacy is shot!

If it appears that I make BAD/SMART ALECK posts that don't follow the normal creed - take it in stride...

..after all, this business isn't normal anyway....

If the merry moderators wanna take me off here...so be it....I was expecting this, but have you noticed some slacking recently?

You can become a radio-info web cadet and 'believe' you earn brownie points, or feel some inner-sanctioned GLORY for posts...

..but I'm gonna pass on THESE kind of positions though..

Major,

I for one enjoy the fact that you seem to have a passion for what seems to be a dieing art form, brodcasting.

Local stations are shedding people faster than my dogs winter coat.

By the way, hats of to KJR and the great job you men and women are doing trying to save our Sonics!! This team can only get better with local owners. Look at the Seahawks 9 years ago!!

Yes and no.....I know people in the biz, but as LockJock would declare: "..I do it as a public service..."

uh,,,BTW: why isn't this in the 'Tale it Outside" section??
:)

Ahhhh majoradio...good point...this business is NOT normal. And it never will be.

But I do think it is an interesting point brought up for the Movin' morning show, given the controversy that surrounded the handling of the situation. You can't give the new show two thumbs up at this point in time, based on the fall book. I think the irony would be if the ratings for that particular daypart were successful BECAUSE of the old morning show. Wouldn't that be a kick in the head? :-\
