"Question for the Rochester market mavens: How do the Classic stations differentiate between themselves, aside from Wease on the Fox. Can any one of them break away from the pack? Perhaps the 25-54 numbers show a clear winner in the Classic Hits/Rock derby that the 12+ numbers do not."
IIRC, not really. But there is an obvious answer. It's strong personality in the three biggest dayparts for classic rock, namely morning drive, midday workplace listening and afternoon drive. As of now, WCMF has a morning show full of good sidekicks in search of a central anchoring personality who has yet to emerge, while Fox has Wease fulfilling that role well and a supporting cast that's settling in. Over at 98.9 the Buzz, Kimberly and Beck seem to be getting the job done with a chatty show that sounds more female-friendly and may be aiming more toward Tony Infantino and co. over at Warm 101, or the upper end of what was WPXY's audience, but with edgier music. CMF has a strong midday/workplace listening host with Dave Kane while Fox is voicetracked/canned and I can't speak about what Buzz or anyone else does since I'm clearly in no position to hear it. In afternoons, CMF HAD the upper hand with Brian Robinson and clearly needs to replace him with someone equally strong, while again, the Fox tries to compete with a hard drive and Buzz seems to be aiming younger. The first station that manages to put solid people able to attract 25-54s in all three dayparts is the winner...if anyone actually ever does step up to the plate.
