Fall '10 Buffalo-Niagara Falls Persons 12+

Many other posters here have already expressed my own feelings on this subject.

Question for you Buffalo people who are familiar with Southern Ontario radio. Have you ever heard(or watched) similar type talk hosts coming out of the Great White North?

No.

I wouldn't say the internet is all that liberal.

Radio used to have higher standards and didn't pander. The older generation knew that with great power comes great responsibility. Report the facts yes, but leave out the hate and name calling.

Have you noticed that many of the same people defending talk hosts are the same ones who bash the news media? The message is clear, "Don't try to inform me, just agree with me".

Years ago I saw talk host say outragous things just to get people angry enough to call....it's just entertainment.

Listen to CFRB 1010 (also available on 6070KHz shortwave) Toronto some time. The tone of their talk radio is much more civilized.

What you heard on WBEN today? Confrontation and strident if not defiant assertions about the rights of free speech and talk radio's role (or lack of such) in the Tucson tragedy. Plenty of incitement.

What you heard on NPR, WNED-AM and WBFO? Reasoned conversation that featured republicans and democrats discussing all aspects of the shooting. Plenty of insight.

Not surprising.

Now you know why NPR affiliates have been chipping away at major commercial talkers already in market after market, even before Tucson. But this weekend may have provided radio with one of its defining moments, and one wonders if it'll be bad news for the biig commercial talkers...if you are a talk station the last thing you want to be considered is part of the problem.

Blaming talk radio for anger in politics is like blaming a stuffy nose for causing a cold. The increased level of vitriol stems from people who want control over their own lives and to mind their own business being told by other people how to live, and what social priorities are acceptable.

Rush is just a brightly colored cork on the river of popular sentiment. Bright red, of course...

For generations now, political compromise has been defined as a slower move to the left. As more people reach the limits of their tolerance, they'll start insisting on moving back to the right, and it'll be harsh at times.

This is an emotional time for everyone, but let's stay off politics. It's a radio board, a friendly one and the best way for people to get snippy with each other is talking politics and/or religion. Back to the main topic...

That's a well-placed time-out Cee! ;D You're right. This is for the most part, a friendly board and politics can definitely fire people up.

Good suggestion about ratcheting it down here. Nobody wants to be sent to the principal's office, otherwise known as the purgatory known as Take It Outside.

After looking at the Rochester Persons 12+ it occured to me that Buffalo's Lake gets close to the share in Rochester (1.2) as it does in Buffalo (1.9).

Is Whethersfield's Lake taking away listeners from Entercom's once dominant WCMF? Seems to be a logjam of Rochester stations in the 3 and 4 share range. And four stations in Roch that are classified as Classic Hits plus two classified as Classic Rock? Meeeng!

Question for the Rochester market mavens: How do the Classic stations differentiate between themselves, aside from Wease on the Fox. Can any one of them break away from the pack? Perhaps the 25-54 numbers show a clear winner in the Classic Hits/Rock derby that the 12+ numbers do not.

Apologies. I thought better of it myself, tried to cut all but the first sentence, but apparently there's a time limit for editing.

IIRC, not really. But there is an obvious answer. It's strong personality in the three biggest dayparts for classic rock, namely morning drive, midday workplace listening and afternoon drive. As of now, WCMF has a morning show full of good sidekicks in search of a central anchoring personality who has yet to emerge, while Fox has Wease fulfilling that role well and a supporting cast that's settling in. Over at 98.9 the Buzz, Kimberly and Beck seem to be getting the job done with a chatty show that sounds more female-friendly and may be aiming more toward Tony Infantino and co. over at Warm 101, or the upper end of what was WPXY's audience, but with edgier music. CMF has a strong midday/workplace listening host with Dave Kane while Fox is voicetracked/canned and I can't speak about what Buzz or anyone else does since I'm clearly in no position to hear it. In afternoons, CMF HAD the upper hand with Brian Robinson and clearly needs to replace him with someone equally strong, while again, the Fox tries to compete with a hard drive and Buzz seems to be aiming younger. The first station that manages to put solid people able to attract 25-54s in all three dayparts is the winner...if anyone actually ever does step up to the plate.

Looking at these 12+ ratings for Rochester and Buffalo, I couldn't help notice the number of stations with less than a 1 share. Many are stand alone AM's. It's a wonder how they stay on the air. On a good day, they probably have about 63 listeners, most of them 65+. Their AQH Persons are most likely in the 200 to 300 range at best. What reason is there to listen to their third tier satellite programming or the marginal local programming. I know these stations don't sell ratings, but it must be very difficult to pay the bills having only a point five or point seven, Mon-Sun. Some of their dayparts may not have a point one share. Ask The Electrician, Colon Blow brokered programming and the Polka Train add only so much to the bottom line. How do you make payroll at five dollars a holler?

From the other point of view, what reason is there to spend even more money and do something else when the odds are that it won't make a difference? This is the reality of running radio in the 21st century. Regardless of what you do, a market can only support a certain number of stations, and just about every town is over-licensed to the point where you have a bunch of losers like this.
