FALL 2011 RATINGS-COLUMBIA

All of the Inner City stations had nice increases save for Fox 102 which dropped to it’s lowest 12+ that I’ve ever seen for them. Even their sports station was up.

In Cumulus land, B-106 had a nice increase. Was this partly due to their positioning as the place for Christmas music? (even though they were not wall-to-wall Santa). WOMG dropped nearly two points. This tells me that Columbia likes Marvin Gaye and the Beatles better than Journey and Kansas.

Your thoughts?

Did Double O quit subscribing?

That was a drop for Magic, but I still think they sound good - they did what they had to in order to remain viable to advertisers.

Double O was an apparent non-subscriber. In the book, they suffered from being too tightly focused.

WARQ appeared to have benefited from diary placement. In some demos and dayparts they have more females than one would expect. That station benefits from being the only choice for 18-24 men besides Country and NOK.

WOMG and FOX were down, which is unusual. Older men diary placement issue, again? I hadn't looked closely enough. Part of Fox's issue was WLTY which with their 80's rock slant for most of the period shared the most with Fox.

WTCB was all-Christmas shortly after Thanksgiving though Christmas night. It appears they benefited from that. The proof of the effectiveness of what one commentater elsewhere called "what remains of Mike McVay's brain" will be seen in the Winter report.

Correction: WTCB was all-Christmas at night since before Thanksgiving, either the week before Christmas or so they went 24/7 holiday.

Actually, WTCB went all Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. They used to do that just for that day for shopping music. But they stayed all in from that point on. I'm curious what was meant about Mike McVay's brain. Is he thought of as a burn out or has he really been sick or something?

I was a little surprised by Fox 102's bad numbers. But it looks like 107.5 sports did really well, so maybe the rock guys wanted some sports?

I think the poster on one of the other forums was referring to McVay becoming part of the Cumulus team.

Frankly, in the late 1980's early 1990's when he consulted 93.5, I was none to impressed by McVay then. I thought he was out of touch with what was currently happening and out of touch with the reality of the market.

Reading his blog and tweets, my opinion today is that McVay is a smart, knowledgeable, affable man that can sell his ideas and people buy into what he has to say because of the strength of his personality. In short, that is pretty much what a hyper-financially "successful" consultant does. It certainly does not guarantee results nor does it make the consultant any less out of touch with current trends or the reality of the marketplace.

Too bad we didn't get to see how 92.1 did with all-Christmas.

I know it's widely unpopular by most on this board, but all-Christmas was a smart move for 106.7. I never understood why they didn't do it (didn't they, for some insane reason, put all-Christmas on WOMG in 2010, instead of B) - actually, they were one of the few AC's in the country that never made the all-Christmas switch. In addition to finally making 98.5 sound like a classic hits station in 2011, Cumulus deserves credit for making 106.7 finally sound like a real AC.

I wasn't one of the naysayers.

It was a logical move. 92.1 should have gone all-Christmas as well, but it did not happen.

Will WTCB carry the "Christmas Bump" moving forward? How well targeted are they as a "elbow-safe very warm AC?" (those that have had kids will get that reference) The answer is that we will see.

Don't know if I agree that six weeks of Christmas music makes for a "real AC" ... but I agree with 98.5
It'll be interesting to see what 106.7 does at night. (no longer live at night or overnight)
John Tesh ?

According to their website, Tesh in on afternoons at 92.1 FM.

Thanks. I didn't know that 92.1 had Tesh AND Delilah. That could make things even more interesting for WTCB at night
Yuck. Can't forget syndicated mornings, as well. It's common for Cumulus to just automate their AC's at night, so 106.7 may not do anything.

I meant that 106.7's playlist as a whole is sounding like a real AC playlist. Under Citadel, it was a strange hodge-podge that didn't make much sense. Now it sounds more like Magic 98.9 in Greenville or Y-102.5 in Charleston.

I guess the maggots have finally taken complete control of my brain. I could have sworn I heard some non-Christmas music on B-106.7 after Thanksgiving. In that case, the talk of a "holiday bump" for them might not be so accurate. But then again, that may just be the maggots talking.

I know they were doing Christmas in the evening and all weekend for awhile. I can't remember when all-Christmas started. Two weeks out?

@ dudefan.. Thats what I was saying.. This is the first time Glory didn't show up.. From what I've heard, I understand Alex was calling other stations to get the numbers.. Sad day in this business.. :(

and depending on diary placement and luck of the draw you will get what you get. i realize that arbitron controls national and agency buys but what is sad is that a station that has listeners in a market, but can't afford arbitron is left out. it is too bad that national buyers and local agencies don't understand how arbitron works. once the billing is done i sold it and that is all that matters no matter what the results were for the customer.
