Fall Arbitrons for Bham

"Kiss" is still at the top (what a surprise). ;)

Christmas was good for "Magic".

Listeners are still asking the question..."Why (Y) 94.5"? as WYDE comes in ahead of the "new 94.5"!
Is it time for WYSF to spin the format wheel again??

Thoughts?

"The New 94-5 FM"---we can't decide if we want to take on Magic or the Q, so we'll try to take on both of them. Gee, this station is the biggest train wreck to hit Birmingham airways since the days of the Point. The thing about it is, both Magic and the Q are vulnerable to straight ahead competition. The problem is, Magic has been Magic for 25 years (how many stations today can say that they've kept the same format for a quarter-century?), and the Q has been in their format even longer, if you include the days as Super Q-104. Call it unoriginal, but maybe Citadel needs to change the call letters from WYSF back to WAPI-FM and relaunch the station as I-94.5 (making the nod to today's digital receivers). It's been nearly 17 years since Birmingham had two stations competing for the CHR/Top 40 audience. Maybe it's time to get a Top 40 war going again.

Why was The Point a train wreck? It may have been a bad format decision, but at least musically they were focused.

And as for I-94.5? Why would anyone care about digital receiver monikers? PPM's are almost here. Listening will be recorded electronically. Human recall is no longer a part of the equation. It will make no difference what you call your station on-air.

At least in my opinion, the Point was a train wreck because they neglected so many permutations of what '80's CHR was all about. Basically, the Point's slogan should have been, "Best of '80's...so long as the music was from a hair band." IIRC, the only African-American artist whose music was played on the Point was Prince.

And looks like werc and ther news talk has fallen after all thes years. always # 5 or in the top 8 at least for years. And now @ 15, is there long run over?

They never imaged themselves to be an 80's Top 40 in any way. They were focused on the Hot AC side of 80's hits. IMO, a "train wreck? means a mish-mash of music that doesn't fit together, which is exactly what you describe. What so you think they should have been playing?

As a Hot AC, they would be trying to strategically place themselves between adult contemporary WMJJ and CHR-formatted WQEN.

What I don't get is the fact that "Y" had, for all intents and purposes, morphed into hot AC after Rick and Bubba left and before the official format change around Memorial Day, and they weren't fairing too well with the format before Memorial Day. In fact, from the 12+ ratings, they're drawing essentially the same numbers now as they were back then. I guess the folks at Citadel figured they could put a "fresh coat of paint" on it with a new name ("the new 94.5" ::)) and that might help. I don't believe it's working.

That'd be interesting though if WAPI-FM came back as "I-94.5" or "I-95", though. :)
