Fall Book

Ouch! That's gotta hurt. Weren't they number one in the Summer book?

Kevin Welch must have lost his lunch when he saw that. A stunning reversal. Is there any logical explanation beyond "Arbitron"?

Huge book for KRWM, may be their biggest Christmas music Fall book ever. The extrap for December was out of this world. KCMS was almost as big. Seem Fall belongs to the Christmas music stations. I wonder if this means several more stations will jump on the bandwagon next year like KPLZ, KBSG, JACK, KBKS, KMTT, who knows maybe the Funky Monkey. No question that this market loves Christmas music. PPM is showing even stronger numbers out of Philly with the AC doing a close to an 18 share in 25-54 adults for the Christmas month.

It appears, as in past years that the stations that feel the pain in Fall due to Christmas music are naturally the female leaning stations like KPLZ and KBKS along with the conservative talk stations. This year, both Country stations also felt some impact in the December extrap. Pretty wild.

Lost in the book was KISW surpassing KZOK for the first time 25-54, after growing for several months and KUBE now completely dominating 18-34 with their best number in years in that demo. KBKS and KQMV were no where to be seen. Overall the book was driven by Christmas music. KRWM did an 18 share in women 18+ for the month in prime dayparts. Don't think I've ever seen that, for any station.

In answer to the above questions:

KMTT: 1st to 15th (big summer book was based on one odd extrap in July and not real)
KOMO: tied for 14th. KIRO is top ten and top five 6a-7p.
KKOL: Never shows up, even in raw cume. KTTH and KVI are in the one share range.
18-34 females: KUBE is the winner by far for the book KRWM and KCMS won in December.

djdan,

I've noticed over the years that most format flips occur prior to the start of the fall book. Now that this book has come and pass, when is the next time stations might consider a format flip? And from what you have seen in this market, do you see anyone actually pulling the plug on their current format?

You are actually incorrect. Nationally and in this market the prime time to adjust a format is in December or
January these are NAB statistics and not mine. My theory is that three weeks of December are not rated and January is lowest revenue month for radio. These factorsprovide the perfect framework for execution of a format change. Summer is the second prime time to make aformat move. In my humble opinion there are two or three stations that should consider a format change. None have made the move during this prime time. KBSG, KNDD, KQMV and several of the AM stations would benefit from some adjustment. I would make no move based on Fall book given the over-performance of AC and Christian stations thanks to Christmas music. That said, one could make a strong case for an oldies based AC or Bright AC. This station would be guaranteed a slice of the Christmas music format pie each Fall and would face weak competition in WARM-FM the rest of the year. Lack of a oldies based ac or bright ac in the market creates an attractive option along with the benefit of the inexpensive cost structure of a soft-ac. On a seperate note there are stations besides WARM and KCMS that benefit from the Christmas music as female cume shifts radically. KUBE, KISW are prime examples of stations, where none of the audience migrates to Christmas music and so by default see a rise in listenership as their competitors KBKS and KZOK lose some audience to Christmas music. It heightens their Diary response rate. Educated media buyers have begun discounting the Fall book especially when buying female demographics.

So, one good month and the station went to #1?

Where are the other talk stations other than KIRO....

KPTK 1090(Hartmann/Schultz have been neck and neck with Ross/Monson)

KVI

KTTH

KOMO

Is this 6A-7P M-F, or what? Please explain.

The numbers posted by rb are 6a-12mid 25-54, though 6a-7p is not much different. On the
AM dial only KIRO was a top ten player. Ross and Monson finished top five 25-54 and top two
in the last two months. No other AM station KPTK, KOMO, KVI, KTTH, KKOL was even in the
top 15 against Ross and Monson. KIRO afternoons finished 3rd for the book.
Most of the rest of the audience was over at KRWM and KCMS for the Fall Christmas
music, which hurts conservative talk almost as much as female based FM stations.

Not even Rush Limbaugh? If not, then they must be very close. When (pending approval) 1090 changes their daytime pattern, they will be more of a competitive player daytimes. Overall, the 4 book, and even 2 year, 12+ average for 1090 looks steady, unlike KVI, KTTH.

What is noteworthy here, although it's just 12+, not 25-54, 6A-MID M-Sun, is that KVI is tied with 1090 !

Reminds me of the old days when Jennings/Siegel were fired from KING, which was stuck at 2 shares, and then under Jennings, KVI acheived over 6 shares in 1994 12+

And, for 12+, KVI and KTTH have reached record lows in the fall book.
These two poorly managed stations keep discarding their local hosts, so what do they expect?

KIRO under Clendening, Beck, and Pridemore kept discarding their hosts, and ratings plummeted. Why didn't KVI and KTTH learn the lesson that Seattle listeners prefer local talent? Mike Siegel, is he still on AM 1400 in Silverdale? Right now, KIRO is beating them 25-54, as you point out.

KTTH only is at only 2.3, compare that to about 4.0 when programming geniuses Ken Berry and Kris Olinger were in charge, with Mike Siegel mornings.

And in 1994 under programming genius Brian Jennings, KVI acheived a 6.4 12+ ! That's 3 times this falls' record low of 2.1!

KVI reminds me of KTBL 1050 in Albuquerque, a second tier talk station w/ second tier syndicated programs. Fisher should just sell KVI instead of playing around with Dr. Laura and others.

KKOL don't get me started. There are too many talk stations in Seattle that rely too much on syndicated talent. There are plenty of local hosts residing locally who SHOULD be on the air full time - Bryan Styble, Erin Hart, and I don't know where Lou Pate is right now. To bad that Ernie Brown is back in Texas, he was KOMO's best host following Larry Nelson's departure. Mike Siegel should be on the air locally.

Seattle's local programmers just don't know how to cultivate local talent. And if they do, then they fire them. Where is Bryan Suits? Where is Rusty Humphries? Laura Lee? Your market is a laughing matter. It's ashame that Kris Olinger and Ken Berry have moved on, they managed KIRO and KTTH at their most recent peaks. KOA, KKZN, KSFO, and KGO are terrific stations.

What in the world is going on at KVI, they move Schramm and Carlson to afternoons, replacing them with Dr. Laura?

Makes no sense. Local hosts should be 9A-NOON for the highest cume. You don't put your best properties in afternoon drive, and syndicated shows middays.

Mark Levin should be live 3pm-5pm after Hannity, if they want to be all conservative.

THEN...program the Dr. Lauras and all the others when nobody is listening after dinner.

Why don't they carry Alan Colmes if they claim to be a FOX news talk station? Makes no sense not to be fair and balanced.

As for KTTH displacing local morning talent - 3 hosts in 3 years (Siegel, Boze, Sytmann), with a syndicated show, that is appalling. Just bring Mike Siegel back, and ad some local newscasters from KIRO.

And where is Dan Sytman? Why not have a duo with two hosts? What happened?

And as for KIRO, why does Bryan Styble STILL not have the Midnight-430am timeslot?

Why are they delaying this programming change?

Why is Erin Hart not doing evenings on KIRO - who is Luke Burbank?

Listeners will be more receptive to hosts they've heard before, rather than new folks from out of town.

How about bringing back Charlie Jaco for some insightful political analysis for the elections?

What was wrong with Frank Shiers?

Turi Ryder?

Atty. Robert Pittmann's Legal Line? Is that still on KTTH? It belongs on KIRO, Bob lost a lot of fans when they moved it to KTTH, bad move.

Lookin at the numbers cowboys and cept for KIRO the rest of the AM stations are in the crapper :p
KJR-Am in mornings actually did okay with dudes :) middays rush is toast and kiro rules 25-54 ;D

Okay, enough about a band of radio that no one under the age of 50 listeners too. Christmas music
aside, does anyone think that The WOLF will come back against KMPS this year? KMPS seems to
have restablished themselves but the dudes still sound pretty old  The country audience 18-34
done evaporated  I'm thinkin with christmas music goes away and arbirtron gets its head on straight
18-34 will come back to WOLF and the battle begins again. One country young and one old 8)

in mornings does anyone truly believe KRWM is number one and KCMS number two. Get real ::)
