Fall Numbers Out...B94 Off To A Good Start

Well, the Fall '07 numbers are out, and B94 is starting strong with a 1.8, the highest ratings it's had in at least a year. Still lots of room for improvement of course, but overall, not bad for a start.

Where do you see it going from there? Predictions for the next book?

Wonder if 3WS regrets not joining the all-Christmas fray?

1250 has its usual strong Steeler-influenced book, now goes back into hibernation until next Fall.

WPTT and KQV under the Mendoza line.

If B94 can get to a 1.8 with no promo/hype and only a couple weeks with jocks in mid/late December, I think they'll atleast get ahead of WLTJ in the next ratings in March.

Dave- I hear your point, but I have to say that when K-Rock was doing better in the ratings despite the fact listeners never knew if they'd be listening to rock or some sort of talk like Loveline or Chris Kidd (or was it Kidd Chris?), then the B-94 fans on here were calling for that station's demise.

Granted, few stations will have the rapid rise that 104.7 had. Even on here, however, when Jammin' (was that what it was called before 104.7?) went down and 104.7 was in its first weeks, we had posters writing they "knew people" who said 104.7 was tanking and Jammin' would be back shortly.

B-94 wasn't doing well before its change a few years ago. Now they want to pattern the station like it was before it became K-Rock.

How far can it grow then? To a 3.0?

Granted, we are playing out the "Pop vs. Rock" rivalry when I bring this up. Hopefully the fired B-94 people will get their old jobs back. That's a positive.

And K-Rock got progressively worse as it was on the air. No arguement there.

But it is my hope that the demise of K-Rock, and for that matter The Zone, wasn't because Pittsburgh is so in love with it's current rock or talk programming. There's room for more there.

I think KRock wasn't properly promoted. They had some good talents on there (Paulsen, etc), but they weren't able to parlay that onto the pr level they should've.

Boss, I don't think 3ws regrets not going Chrsitmas. Their numbers were decent. I bet next year WISH hesitates to go Christmas. Just because they have one good month, doesn't mean that they are now going to get a great book each month.

Hopefully we will see B 94 soon beat out KISS in the ratings. Give it some time and I beat its going to happen. I listen to B 94 online and it sounds great. Just somewhat like B 92 in Charleston, SC which I listen to in my car.

It seems like Bob FM is on a downward spiral. I might be in the minority here, but I enjoy listening to variety hits stations.

Are the variety hits stations taking a hit nationwide?

From what I've been reading, yes. The concept appears to be growing overseas, though.

I think Bob FM is getting the numbers it's been getting lately because of 3WS doing the format tweaks they've been doing, they've come into their own as a variety hits station, though they don't label themselves as such.

What I've predicted would happen with the so-called variety hits stations is exactly what's happening now, as it is with every gimmick format since the dawn of time: They were comfortable with the numbers they were getting, so it became time to start narrowing the playlist. Many a station has died a grizzly death because those who tuned in to hear their favorite songs aren't hearing them anymore, and then all of a sudden you've got repetition after repitition after repitition.

Ken, from what I had read the "Bob" type stations usually peak in 18-24 months after the switch, so it isn't surprising to see their numbers going down. Quick question though Ken, I didn't see our favorite FM station here in Butler make the ratings for Pittsburgh this time. Is that anything of a surprise to you?

I was more surprised that we actually DID crack the Arbitrons than not! We put out a very good product on 97.7, and we're very proud of what we've done.

However, if we marketed ourselves actively as a Pittsburgh station, then perhaps we could sustain those numbers. But the question we have to answer is, is a blip in the Pittsburgh Arb worth turning our backs on the community that has supported us for so many years? For an almost last-place rating in a city we barely reach?

I say no. We market ourselves as a more regional station, serving Butler County and the counties that surround us. Our FM signal blows into Youngstown crystal clear, in addition to the northern part of Pittsburgh. We have always sold reputation over ratings and that has served us well...even during the days when WLER was a tape-based automation system that frequently hiccuped when it was on the air.

We also had some turnover in our morning show recently...that also might have something to do with the dip.

You do have a very good product on 97.7 - even I have it programmed on my FM dial in the car and I normally don't listen to that type of music. Keep up the good work there Ken and thanks for your reply.

Thank you, thank you...I can't take credit for it all, though. Our success is a job we all have to work together to accomplish. We're a tight-knit little family, and that's the kind of chemistry we need to accomplish our goals.

KENHAWK- Do you guys have any openings there? I know you had a listing for an AMD host, but I'm guessing that's been filled.
