Fall P1s

Has anybody else noticed the downword trend on WSJT? With 12+, three down books and the current P1 is also down. Has Smooth Jazz worn out its welcome in Tampa Bay or does CBS/Infinity need to shake things up a bit?

SJT has been one of most stable stations in the market. The PD (Ross Block), Al Santana (mid day) and Alicia Kaye (PM drive) have all been in place since the station first went on the air in 95. In today's world, that is practically unheard of.

The recent move of putting Kathy Curtis in mornings and moving George Nix to evenings was something of an attempted shakeup. IMO it hasn't worked well. Jazz mornings are still about the music and all George really did was time, temp, intro the newsguy and get to the music. Curtis' attempt to make it sound more like a "morning show" have sounded fairly lame. Rumor has it that the move was spearheaded by CBS bigwigs and Block was not too thrilled with it.

I don't know how much interference the PD is getting from above, but my guess is if they leave him alone he can probably right the ship. Block has a strong track record. He has made several adjustments to the music mix over the years to keep WSJT on top of changing audience patterns and the station has always been solid.

That being said, a bad fall book and CBS may look for a bigger shakeup.

Let's admit it, it's an AC station with the music programmed during the workday to compete with Magic and The Dove. I heard Celine Dion's "If You Asked Me Too" yesterday on WSJT. It wasn't even buried in a set forcing Al Santana to back sell it as "that was the amazing Celine Dion". I think 94.1 probably bills real well and unless the suits from corporate come down and actually pull the trigger on a change you won't see one. And while were talking about the CBS group, how about WQYK not only holding off US-103.5, but now getting back to ratings it had before US existed? I think this only proves the point that heritage and long time market stability will get you numbers. Something that WSJT could also be relying on but with another dip or two could cause some concern.
